im sure they wouldnt sell a A socket CPU , ive checked novatech

any socket A cpu would do but y ou can only go so far with this motherboard

if you have the money go for a core2duo E6750 bundle

It's just too old to seriously upgrade. Shame.

Probably a puny 120W old style mATX power supply.
SDRAM memory up to 768 MB.
OEM Via KT133 socket A motherboard with no likelyhood of bios upgrades.

Forgeddaboutit!! :(

I would reckon to spend £500 or so I already have a 20" tft and 160gb slave hard drive, I don't use games.

I gotta warn you, Jimmy. These people are seriously into hot hardware... :D

Something like £279 (plus Operating System) Isys Ex this will drive your monitor nicely, with a modest graphics card that is more for Vista and multimedia performance than anything:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?PC-1106

And it's modern and highly upgradeable and you can add your hard drive as extra storage. You won't believe how much quicker it is than your ol' Compaq.

would you prefer a pre built system, or want to build your own, if your going for a prebuilt, then maybe this one will do the trick http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... ml?PC-1107 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?PC-1107) also it does have a good graphics card in it, just in case you decide to do a bit of gameing, and for 380 quid with vista ultimate installed, not a bad price and a 100 quid under your budget

that link supplied above is a good 8 series card at affordable prices
if you was to have a few younger chaps aka family they might wana have alittle play on some games
this will play all games nicely at good settings

update-
if your planning on daily internet and word proccessing this package is right up your street too :) price is just right and will not have a high cpu usuage rate compared to your old one :)
