If DVD/ video playback screen remains blank when outputting to a second display/TV the most likely cause is copy protection.
Windows seems to contain some variety of macrovision protection which can "hide" the actual movie when watching on other displays.
Solutions:
1) Setup the TV as primary monitor
2) Try playing another video file, with a different program (VLC etc). Pause this "other" movie, but leave the player running. Then try playing the one you want to watch using another program (WinDVD/PowerDVD/WMP)
