View Full Version : 2008 workstation
worth a google :)
looks interesting to say the least - may try it on my x80r later...

OK, this is worth a peek if you're bored - it feels snappier than Vista x64, and you can get 240 days out of it before having to reinstall. Not sure if it will bench faster though, just 'feels' faster.

Ah yes the old vista vs the world argument pops to mind.
The funny thing is people have got vista to benchmark faster than xp. You just turn off lots of stuff and change the configs slightly like I have.
I had a look at this. I might try it at some point.
yeah, tweaking vista did improve it somewhat, but only did it when I felt it going slow so don't really have a point of reference other than its base install 'feels' quicker. Had a few annoyances to sort out, but less than vista so far too.

I liked server 2008. Was running 64bit datacenter edition. Uses a lot of memory, but I'm pretty sure you can get that down. Vista uses a lot anyway
Have pretty much got all drivers i need sorted out on this OS now, and what to enable/what to leave disabled.
Had to get a new sound card for Oblivion though, but was in the big plan anyway. It worked, but crashed after hmmm, 5-10 mins.

I wish they'd make a 64bit binary for Supreme Commander. That game eats 2gig of ram easily. It's about time games came with 64bit versions!
hmmm, you can amend applications so they are aware of memory over 2gb. 32 bit processes are usually limited to 2GB under XP x32. If you play it a lot, it might help, certainly worth a go - you'll loose nothing and have a bit to gain from it. Use CFF Explorer to do it

Yeah I've done that, puts it up to 3Gb. Still for a game that can use so much memory it would be better if it was a native 64bit application.

Where's the cheapest place to get a license for 1 computer?
Thank you.
Nick
hmmm depends what you're after it for really...
if you want to test it, you can get a 60 day license for free from Microsoft, that you can 'rearm' 3 further times for a total of 240 days, then you'll need to reinstall after that.
Otherwise the partner program is £200, again for testing, and I think you get 2008 in that, along with 10+ vista licenses
or you can go retail.
Personally... I am testing it a lot. :) (but the partner program is certainly appealing...)
