just wondered if anyone can recommend a cooler for a P4 2.6 Socket 478 which is very quiet, but as you can see from pic's below it's a tight fit
case Antec NSK 2480
motherboard Asrock P4VM900 Micro ATX

cheers for the info had the P4 2.6 under sofa for a while so wanted to do something with it as i had a few spare parts about, have been using a HP Compaq dc7100 for dvd playback and for BBC iplayer and 4od for my lcd tv and just wanted something with a case where i could use normal size cards as the old P4's are great for a media PC

The above is the Thermaltake Socket 478 cooler in the Novatech range. I found it pretty good, and the fan is bog standard 80mm if you want to try a very quiet fan like a Sharkoon. It has a trace of heatsink ringing. The yellow cable is an Akasa speed reduction cable available at Maplin for a couple of pounds if your temps are good enough to slow the fan down furthur. Which I could with a 3 GHz Pentium.
The Nexus PHT 3600 is fiddly to fit, but also works well with the speed reduction cable, but has a 70mm high speed fan, which is surprising. It has the benefit of blowing in the direction of the North Bridge chip. Either is way better than the Intel stock cooler. Probably the Nexus just sqeezes home first.

Well, matz, about the first things I ever bought at Novatech were a Nexus 350W quiet power supply and CPU cooler for my cheapie emachines.

Few years back, 120mm fan power supplies were rare. This all ran extremely quietly with the speed reduction cable on the CPU fan. Loudest thing you could hear was the hard drive clicking. Eventually, with additional passively cooled graphics, I had to compromise a little and add a quiet 80mm case fan. That XpertVision 7600GT you see fitted is quiet too, and ramps down in 2D use. I also cut some extra air intakes to increase the airflow. It's still very good.
My current PC could do with some more work. Stock cooler and cheapish 2X 80mm fan power supply. I haven't quite decided on a good Socket 775 cooler yet. My case has one of those CPU tunnel things. :?

cheers all for the info have a Thermaltake on order as the stock fan sounds like theres someone drying there hair inside my case
Just wonder about something which may sound a little mad but wondered about reversing the flow from the two case fans as was thinking they could drive more than enough air flow over heatsink "off to put my he's mad hat on"

Nah. Passive cooling needs bigger heatsinks. And Antec will have carefully engineered the overall heat flow.
That Asrock P4VM900-SATA2 and 380W power supply are talking to me. I know, it's spooky.
They are saying: PCI Express X16 graphics card!
They are saying: send Novatech some more money!
You know you want to. :D

In the end i got a Thermaltake Socket 478 cooler then fitted a 80mm to 120mm adapter so i could fit a Akasa AK-183-L2B Amber Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan so now i have a nice and quiet pc :)

That is SO cool! :D
I wanted to do that, but my power supply got in the way. :(
I was tempted to add some bits of bicycle innertube rubber to the vanes, but gave up in disgust when the fan adapter wouldn't fit.
BTW, I just noticed that the mounting bracket on your Asrock is the other way round from my old Intel D845GVSR:

Which means your North Bridge gets some airflow. 8)
