Matshita UJ-840D

I've got the athlon MT-34 model, It's pretty good, decent battery life, and quite fast.

We are starting to use Sony DVD Recorders so in time most of our product lines will switch to these drives. We may still have some stock that has Panasonic Drives though.

As it seems your very aware of the proplem with the Matshita drives i was wondering (as Fozzee was):

If it is possible to return my newly purchased laptop, under the 2 year care package, and have the Matshita drive removed and replaced with a Sony one?

You could even just send me out a sony drive and i will put it in myself and send you back the Matshita.

Matshita

What an unfortunate name... Sounds accurate from the above posts though.

That depends. We will replace the drive if it is physically faulty however media incompatability is not a fault. No optical drive on the market supports every brand of media and every dye at its full burning speed.

Some discs work on some drives and not others that happens and even with firmware updates this may not make your media work as the particular dye in question may not work with optical pickup used in the drive itself so therefore no matter how many firmware updates you get a particular brands blank cd using a certain dye may just not work.

So depending on exactly what your situation is we may or may not replace the drive. And as i said above changing the drive to another make may or may not solve your issue depending on exactly what the issues is you are having.

If you are concerned i would suggest you speak to one of our tech agents.
However offcially i will state now there is no fault or issue with the Panasonic Drives short of some customers having issues with certain brands of Media and this is a common issue with ALL burners especially when new CD/DVD dyes are coming to market all the time.

I ask that you keep this in mind and obviously we will always try to help our customers as best as we can so if you feel that your drive may be faulty then certainly speak to us about that and we will see what we can do to help.

hmm, problem is it seems to be a quite widespread media incompatibility.

In my particular case:

Nero reports a maximum burn speed of CD's as 24X, but if i try to burn at that speed a write error will occur after about 15%. I need to drop the speed down to 12X to actually get it to burn correctly (something that i forget from time to time resulting in a coaster)

With DVDs it only reads them as 2X, which means it takes 30mins to burn one.

Currently i am using these CDs: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... NOV-CDR52V (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-CDR52V)
(at lease i think its those, the actual brand is Tuffdisk, 52X)

and the DVDs are Datawrite Mach 4, 16X, which i bought from you, but you dont seem to stock any more.

If you have any recommendations of what media actually works with this drive i would love to know.

I would also like to know if it is possible to buy one of these Sony internal laptop drives from you (or somewhere else?) or another drive compatible with these laptops (mine is the Discovery that you have recently stopped selling)

Otherwise i am going to have to buy an external DVD Writer (i would really rather not)

Thanks

Steve

I agree that most of the problems have been media compatiblity. Although this is a poor excuse if 99% of disks are incompatible!! I have yet to find a branded disk which will write at 8x in this drive, I asked novatech to recommend me one which would work and they couldn't. And the issue of the drive disappearing seems to be a common one with these drives too

Go into novatech and insist on a replacement drive. I have done this and am happy with the one they have put in after a battle with the returns department. I must say in Novatechs defence though I have bought a number of items from them and whenever i have received problems they have been generally very helpful.

I'll have to change my ID on this forum now as i expect i am now a marked man hahahahaha

DVDs that work well with this drive are: DataWrite Yellow 8X (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?DAT-DVD850), Tested and working fine at 8X.

Apprently the Titanium CDs (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-CDR521) also work well with this drive (not tested)
