Novatech do stock slimline dvd writers, however they may not be suitable for your machine. Does it come out the side of the laptop or the front? (eg is the outside of the drive flat or shaped) If its a side opening drive there are several available.

Getting the right one is the difficult part.

LiteOn Slimline - DS-8A1P-021C (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?LIT-DS8A1P)

LG Slimline GSA-T20N - 8X DVD+/-RW (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?LG-GSAT20)

Optiarc Slim internal AD-7543A - 8X DVD+/-RW (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NEC-7543A)

In that case any of the generic ones listed above should be suitable. The lack of available info however on the 1501 is a pain.

So this is the one you have.

If you can get hold of one, the next Q is do you have someone to fit it for you? As sometimes taking a lappei apart can be daunting if down right puzzling.

Scuse me, just gonna peruse the manuals and service books for this model, more comments to come.

I had to take out the dvd player in the original laptop, with guidance from a Dell rep, I think I can remember how to do it, but if not, I'm sure I can find someone to help. This is my second laptop from Dell, it's a replacement. I have to say I'd never recommend Dell in a million years, even if they were the last pc manufacturers in the world......I've had the laptop just under a year, and I've had problems with the cd/dvd drives and clocks on both the original and replacement......Dell are not answering my emails, and to be honest, I think I'd be better off replacing the cd/dvd drive than messing about with court cases!!
Your help is very much appreciated.

Typical, novatech site cuts down images regardless of its size.

Ok, on the underside of the lappie, so that the power port is facing away from you, the dvd will be on your right hand side to eject.

To the right of the battery release catch, will be a single screw. that is the one that has to be undone to allow the drive to be removed.

Once that is out you should be able to insert a scribe or similar *probe* to get the drive out by levering it out.

If you can get it out, it might be an idea for you to pop into your nearest novatech and speak to a tech to compare with the drives they stock.

It should however be a straight swap for your old faulty one.

edit.

You beat me to a post

Well, like i said above, to prove it, if possible visit the nearest novatech (or other suitable PC store, just not pcworld if you can help it  ) and take the drive with you, but like i say, it should be a straight swap.

It would be a straight swap if Dell would have the decency to reply to me!!! I bought it from the Dell website. Thanks, I shall do as you suggest, and hopefully they'll have one that'll fit.
Thanks again for your help

I will thanks, but I have to have the money first, so it'll have to be a week this Thursday or thereabouts.
