okay at the moment i have a prebuilt MB pack with 2gb ram. However, according to a tech mate, boosting that to 3 or for gb (for a solid gaming comp capable of assassins creed quality graphics) would bust the harddrive if theirs too much ram. Um.....surely not? And another tech friend supposidly says you have to balance the ratio between hard drive and ram....so ill leave it to the real experts.

urrr? do they work at pcworld? cos I have NEVER EVER heard anything like that :S tbh 3gb isnt really worth it, its more your graphics card that matters more than anything for games, 2gb is fine

Yup, must be a PCWorld worker LOL.. They told my dad that you can copy the XP files off the computer (when it has been preinstalled) and then use it on a new one but, ONLY ONCE.. I was like.. how can they lie like that :| well.. simple.. they don't know what they are talking about, this forum is much better and your own knowledge is much better I am pretty sure :)

to be honest m8, your "tech mates" are talking out of there rear end, they either work for pc world where there knowalage sucks, or there stringing you along, i remember when you first posted about you mb bundle and that will be fine boosting the ram from 2 gb to 3 or 4 gb, just try and get matching ram for the best performance

anyway, back to the question:
no such thing as too much RAM.

currently have 6GB, will soon get delivery of the 4GB pair, to make 4 matched sticks of 8GB goodness

shame all mobo only supports 8GB :( if only i can have 16GB and install 2 games on the RAMdisk.

I used to run RAM disks on my old macintosh for fun, Wu...makes for fast loading! 8)

Task Manager will tell you how much available physical memory you have. Despite my 2GB, XP gaming rarely grabs more than 800MB, so it's largely going to waste...

The most common misconception is that putting faster RAM in will make any difference whatsoever. If I put DDR2-800 in my machine it would still run stock at DDR2-533 speed. That's an Intel CPU and chipset thing. Depends on the hardware details really. For sure, most chipsets also seem to be more stable with two sticks of RAM, rather than four.

oh riiite i thort u wer talkin bout a different type of ram disk (where ram is put in an enclosure and used as a hard drive, and a lil 1.8inch hdd is put in there 2 save 2 when the thing is completely turned off) very expensive lol
