Hi,

I've got a Novatech barebones system as shown below ;
product code BB-P730BUB, order number 3803085
Barebones Bundle * Heatsink and Fan, 512mb Ram, Intel P4 630 3.0 LGA775 Motherboard

I've just bought an XP Pro SP2 OEM cd from a legitimate source and am intending to install this on the barebones tonight in order to get USB2.0 working (I do a lot of 35mm slide scanning and have GOT to have USB2.0 speeds for such file sizes).

However, I've just been doing some googling about XP SP2 installation problems and am concerned to read the page below which claims there are known problems installing XP PRO SP2 on P4 Prescott core PCs.

http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm

Firstly, am I correct in thinking that the P4 630 on my system is a Prescott core?

If so, do you have any advice on whether this barebones system will take an SP2 install ? I've looked at the Foxconn website for any BIOS upgrades etc which might be advisable prior to an SP2 install, but couldn't see any mobo downloads. I'm also loathe to flash the BIOS, as I managed to kill to death a perfectly good dvd burner last year when attempting to upgrade its firmware.

Any advice appreciated, guys.

hello, installing xp pro sp2 on the bundle should be fine. you should not have any problems with the setup or installing the drivers.

a handy site for help installing windows is http://www.windowsreinstall.com.

Also the website article you refer to is outdated from pre august 2004.

Almost any product you buy new will work with SP2 unless it has been hanging around for a long time, in which case get a refund.

When you research anything on the web make sure it is current info, this way it is likely to be relevant.

Yup, SP2 installed fine at the first attempt - thanks for the reassuring words earlier today. Both myself and my pc's usb ports are very happy. :-)

Yes the information refers to the original socket 478 Prescott which needed BIOS update to support SP2. Does not affect any of the new stuff being built. Out of Date information that.
