hi, ive got a Novatech mobo bundle which came with an AMD xp 2500+ (clocked at 1.86Ghz) i was wondering how much i could overclock this.
Would 2Ghz or more be safe or not?
I don't at the moment have any extreme cooling fans or anything, just a basic cooling fan in the case.

2 ghz will be easy mate, go into the bios and look at your temps for the cpu, if they are below 50 degrees C then overclock some, 2.2ghz may be on the cards 8)

No overclocking is safe, and it will void your warranty. I am careful about which parts i do, and don't overclock.
Now the advisory is over, your processor will *probably* reach that speed, and higher, and *probably* be absolutely fine with it. Remeber though, the more you work something, the less its natural lifespan will be too. It comes down to compromise...

I wouldn't be this confident. Be very careful when overclocking any component, it will void your warranty. Ensure you have high quality cooling on all components that are going to be put under extra strain.
A good quality PSU and branded memory are also recommended.
Look at what you are actually doing with the computer and is the extra clock frquency required. You are unlikely to notice a difference between 1.8 and 2.0ghz in real world use.

he just asked how far it will go, so i provided the info
dont shoot the messenger, shoot the person who sent him :P

Liquid nitrogen? I'm sure you could squeeze out 4ghz, it's the safety/damage that can be caused and benefits that people need to be aware of.
Motherboard is also very important on how far a CPU will go

Hit the nail on the head.

Just to add to this.
I oc'd my 2800 xp from
stock:
12.5 x 166mhz FSB
(memory divider running at 4:5?)
resulting 2083mhz
oc: 10.5 x 200mhz FSB
(memory running 1:1)
resulting 2100mhz
No voltage modification needed.
My super pi 1M score went from 52.3s to 48.5s
No vcore increase needed either :-)
Pretty good increase or 17mhz :-)

Skimming that last post I thought the 17mhz was a typo! Are you sure that everything else stayed the same?

Yes just a change of the fsb so its 1:1. I was told athlons work a lot better on a 1:1 ratio. Seems that way too.
I've got it running at a 215x10 on 1.725 vcore now, been running that way for a few days. Only runs a few degree's hotter than before. Usually around 56oC opposed to 53oC.

yeah they do run better on 1:1, something about scaleling(?), thats why some ddr2 memory doesnt worl very well, becuase the AM2 cpu has to scale it down to 200
thats what i heard

yeah just read about this on toms hardware. Didn't really make sense tbh.
Something to do with 400mhz and not being able to get 2.2ghz or some rubbish.
