Project Ice Cube, the Re-launch.

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/3217/sigtogethercopyre3.jpg (http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?p=265319#post265319)

For those of you that have clicked my signature or been around the forums, you will know that this isn’t the first time I’ve started this project. However, rather than carry on with the old thread, I feel a need to start a fresh, and get rid of all the old nonsense.

The reason for this?
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271653259691/dsc05212.jpg
My new toy ?

However, to the designs!

This case is going to be built up of 4 segments, which will then be stacked on top of each other, and some may be separable. Ill explain what each section does as I go through, although all hold a water cooling loop (yes that means 4 loops…)

http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271653259691/1.jpg
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271653259691/2.jpg
The bottom section is what the rest of the case will stack onto. It hold to ‘rods’ for which all the other sections will slide over, holding them all in place. This section will also hold the 4 hard disks behind 2 front intake fans and LCD readout. It will hold a triple rad down the side as well which will be for the NB, SB and motherboard VRMs.

http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271654452055/tier2.jpg
The next section will also house a triple Rad, which will be for the GPU loop. This one primarily holds to Raptor X hard disks, a couple of buttons and an intake fan at the front.

http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271654452055/main_section.jpg
The main section is where it all happens. This will house a single rad (Ram loop), 4 reservoirs (EK 400, 1 for each loop), fill ports, the pc itself and all the fan controlling switches lights and finally my audio hub (Logitech z5500).

http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271654452055/top.jpg
The final Section is what I would call UBER. This will house all the cpu cooling, which will consist of 2 quad blastflow rads. Im an active member of Benchtec, and the idea of this build will be ultimate water cooling, so I can get some killer clocks, and maybe a water chiller too :).

Finally, this is what I have been upto today:
A few practice cuts:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271657471260/dsc05202.jpg
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271657471260/dsc05207.jpg

Then onto my nice, new acrylic for the mod (this is the bottom section):
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271658488794/top.jpg

And making the intakes for the hard disk cage.
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/271659358701/dsc05213.jpg

Many thanks to;
Overclock3d.net, for hosting the images
Aqua-pcs, for dimensions, price comparisons and all the help they give
All those out there reading this for their feedback

Stay Tuned.

Well done! is all i can say! finally your going about it properly, good tools (tile cutter) and finally a good design using the right programs and stuff, i still think it's OTT, but a modular design is a good idea :D make sure u future proof it for whenever you inveitably upgrade

teknokid
27-05-2008, 05:59 PM
i will dont worry :) the water loops will be quick release etc, so i can swap blocks :)
Still gonna cost a fortune though, looking around around £500 for pumps and blocks alone :O

Back in the day, when me n my family were traveling new zealand and australia 5 years ago we still have our cannon elompus (something like that) 3MP camera lol. and it was a hard bargain that we got a free 256MB memory card that we thought was top of the range of the cards :P

since these 5 years digital cameras have evolved but i dont need one ;) would really be in much use unlike some of my mates from school that use them everyday for bludey bebo

Update 14th June 2008
Over the past few weeks not a lot has been happening, as Im currently waiting for a radiator so that I can finish the sides. However, Ive been working on the rear side, and here are the ventilation holes I have made:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/141200488331/p1010312.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

It was then bent into the correct shape. This went a bit wrong, as I folded just before the line (didn’t leave a big enough gap over what I was folding it round) so it may be a bit short, but time will tell whether I need to make it again.
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/141209249603/p1010313.jpg

Next I stripped down the O-so lovely LCD’s that Asus give you ?
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/141209249603/p1010314.jpg http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/141209249603/p1010315.jpg

Next, Using a coping saw and a drill I cut some holes for the new switch and my LCD:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/141210515146/p1010316.jpg
The Lcd hole needs a little work, but I can’t do much until I’ve removed the plastic cover on the acrylic, but I don’t want to risk scratching.
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/141210515146/p1010317.jpg

And finally, The early ones to arrive of my shipments this coming week (various electrical wiring goodies)

Micro Update 25th June 2008

Today a received a lovely parcel from the fantastic guys at Feser. In it was a nice selection of goodies:

The general feel and look of the products is amazing. Everything goes together very nicely and looks the part. Its difficult to get great photos, as the SLR I use has poor macro and the Lumix (Panasonic) isn’t great either… Anyway, without further delay, have a peek:

Photography Update 4th July 2008

This week marks a new beginning… I’ve got hold of an SLR.
My Dad finally gave it to my nagging, and let me use is SLR along with his flash gun. If you could let me know what you think of the photography most, since this is what the update is all about. I’ve also had a few deliveries, so without further wait, here is what I got (some old, some new).

A few shots of a quad rad (2 will be used in the final project, but I only have 1 here):
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/042146289202/dsc05225.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net) http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/042146289202/dsc05224.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

And these are the fans that I will be using for a large part of the build:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/042146289202/dsc05228.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

These are the lovely little plugs that I will be using to take the power around my beast:

http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/042147505966/dsc05233.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

And these will be used for some of the fan connections:

http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/042148283603/dsc05242.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Toggle switch for USB connector (use will be revealed later):
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/042149178940/dsc05236.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

The Mini LCD screen from ASUS:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/042149178940/dsc05238.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

And finally, what the lovely chaps at Feser sent to me:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/042149178940/dsc05243.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

That’s all for now, I’ve got other work done, but I’m going to get that uploaded separately to my photography.
Let me know what you think,
Cheers,
Tek

Nice selection of equipment you intend to use.

Like the idea of the crome plated 3.5mm jacks for the fan connectors.

my 1 question would be why though, seems kinda overkill and can't quite picture how they fit in to a pc build. unless your gonna have it like an old style telephone exchange and can whip em out and move em about

Still, nice shots the Tek, keep it comin.

Hardware 5th July 2008 (more photography work)

I carried on with the SLR last night, trying out a number of new methods etc to get the best pictures possible.
The hardware in my PC at the moment is what I will originally use in the finished mod, and here are a few shots of a choice selection of parts:

I just love close ups of radiators:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/051019414323/dsc05250.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/051019414323/dsc05251.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)
And where would the world be without some LED’s?
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/051019414323/dsc05265.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

RAPTORS!!!
I love them; they’re the best investment photography wise in my computer. I must’ve taken hundreds of pictures of these so far, here’s a few of my favourites:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/051020289667/dsc05257.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/051020289667/dsc05258.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/051020289667/dsc05255.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

And finally, My Maximus felt left out:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/051021554054/dsc05262.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

I hope to keep the photography quality up, certainly of components, I don’t think I’ve got enough room to do the acrylic properly, that will have to be outside..
Comments welcome as usual.

what kind of finish overclocks are you after? for standard use

teknokid

Im looking for about 3.8ghz cpu,
625 graphics card,
1250ish ram,
and hoping for a 500mhz FSB :)
Should be pretty good. Altho I think by the time its done, a new graphics card will go in (280gtx) or ati :)

matz

true, 3.8ghz on q6600? or you got another cpu now?

teknokid

Q6600 :) I know its doable... Ive seen it!
Then Im hoping for 4+ for benchies

TheMadDutchDude
05-07-2008, 11:22 AM
Awesome. If you look on the reviews of OcUK on one of the parts, he has a Q6600 at 4.2, so 3.8 should be very doable :)

GRRR I need money, I want to finish off my rig, could get an extra £25 towards my new Q6600 but.. what is the point? I am going to be nice and send my old CPU off to Fynn for free :) (unless I get offered otherwise hehe)

teknokid
05-07-2008, 11:32 AM
:O you could get £20 for that cpu :)

Dont always trust what OCUK reviews say, a lot of them are lies... I have seen a q6600 hit 4.5ghz and that is valid, lucky chip tho

Also Known As. LOL :)

I could get a part time job but to be honest, how degrading is it standing in Tesco's? And also, espesh when a proper fit girl walks in... and I know her.. how bad would that be? LOL

Nahh I think I am going to stick with pocket money for now until I can get a proper job.. ;)

Just received 4x O2 SIM cards in the post, going to be selling them £4 each :) another £16 towards my new rig hopefully, and also selling some games for another total of £75 :)

Get a job in tesco, but as a warehouse boy.
You get all the plus's like money, discount, easy job etc whilst also staying out of sight from the public.
I worked at tesco for over 2 years, and i can say that it was the best job i have ever had,
I work in IT as a helpdesk engineer level 1/level 2, but tesco was fun!

Also Tekno, i would of expected a better shot of the rads with an SLR, try turning macro on, light from the side and being a distance away whilst zooming in,
That should get you a better shot.

Jonny2bad, that was a good comment which no-one else seemed to notice! haha!

Power Box 12th July 2008

Its been a while, but the weather has been awful over here in England, So I haven’t been able to get out much and mod…

However, I spent a good while this week in the sunny spells getting some more stuff done, and its starting to really take shape.

I made a power box, which will go at the back of the case and distribute the power, as well as being modular.

Measuring out:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121252464253/dsc05269.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Drilling the first hole:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121252464253/dsc05270.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

A Test fit:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121252464253/dsc05271.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Bent into shape:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121252464253/dsc05272.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Hm.. What would a mod be without LED’s?
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121252464253/dsc05273.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Then I drilled some holes for the lovely hose the Feser sponsored me:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121252464253/dsc05279.jpg[/IMG (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Im really pleased with how it looks, It didn’t go perfectly according to plan but I like it.
[img]http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121252464253/dsc05281.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Ive cut some holes for the radiator to go infront of. I need to cut out the acrylic between the holes though:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121252464253/dsc05284.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

This is a shot of the rear panel, which won’t really have much done to it, Its just been cut to size and had a hole for cable routing:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121304361676/dsc05282.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

This is how the whole lot looks, Its really shaping up now: http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121252464253/dsc05283.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

This is the rad that I will be using in this section.. Its just for the motherboard and ram loop, so doesn’t need to be super powerful:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121304361676/dsc05285.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

This is the trimmed back panel, With a hole for cable routing:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121304361676/dsc05282.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

And how the front of the power box looks, I just need a 3.5mm chassis socket to finish it off (and mount it with the sides):
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121310382055/dsc05280.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/121310382055/dsc05279.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

That’s all for now folks, What do you think?

Cheers,

Tek

Very nice work so far buddy. You really are getting this thing closer to completion :) How much longer do you reckon it is going to take, are you working during the summer holidays or are you going to be home and working on your project?

teknokid
12-07-2008, 02:19 PM
Both :) I work from home and its not a 9-5 job, Its flexible so no doubt I will be modding.

TheMadDutchDude
12-07-2008, 02:26 PM

teknokid
12-07-2008, 03:02 PM
Well.. Im about to start writing reviews for overclock3d and I work for my dad

TheMadDutchDude
12-07-2008, 04:05 PM
Ooh, mind if I start writing reviews too? :P I got to make some cash ;) but I don't want to take your job away from you if they only have one place.

I can't find it on their website, LOL I can't be bothered to search right now. Maybe some other time :(

teknokid
12-07-2008, 04:18 PM
What you looking for on their site?

You need to be really accurate about it, Im not doing it for the pay, more for the experience tbh, reviews writers dont get paid a lot...
You can try and get a job, But I already knew them and post all the time on their forums..

Worth a try though, good luck

TheMadDutchDude
12-07-2008, 04:21 PM
Cool, thank you! I sent them an Email asking if they can explain it to be a bit more, we shall see what happens. I would do it for the experience but the pay is a bonus :) I wouldn't mind like £10 a review :D But hayy, that most likely won't happen!

What you saving for now Tek?

Also, just spotted on your picture of your rad, isn't the air meant to be blowing on the rad and not being sucked through it?

teknokid
12-07-2008, 04:42 PM
Its my brothers :P But im buying it off him.

Erm, next up is copper rods, and all the water cooling kit..

£10 a review.. that's what you get :P so lucky thats what your after.

TheMadDutchDude
12-07-2008, 05:43 PM
Well that isn't bad, I was expecting less, could you tell me how I could get in business and write reviews for them? :)

teknokid
12-07-2008, 05:44 PM
You need to send Jim a PM on the forums...

Go through a few reviews, goto forums at the end of the review, then it should have a post by him putting the review on the forum...

TheMadDutchDude
12-07-2008, 05:51 PM
Okay cool, I will give it a shot, lets hope it works out good :)

I am getting my Antec 900 and DVD burner with LightScribe tomorrow :) can't wait!!

Bare in mind you need a good camera for reviews, and some testing kit for hardware etc.. its not cheap :(

TheMadDutchDude
12-07-2008, 06:20 PM
I got a good camera, well dad has!

What type of stuff do you need for reviews? The latest hardware or something? LOL

teknokid
12-07-2008, 06:59 PM
Hm.. You do need pretty good hardware, yours should be fine, Im not sure...
what sort of camera? Im using a DSLR with flashgun and tamron lens.... If that gives you any ideas?

TheMadDutchDude
12-07-2008, 07:09 PM
Nope LOL! I am just using a standard 5.1MP camera, was £200 about a year back. Great picture quality to be honest, even at 2560x**** (not sure what it is) If that is any help :P

teknokid
12-07-2008, 07:13 PM
That should be ok... did you send an email?

TheMadDutchDude
12-07-2008, 07:47 PM
Yeah I did, I sent an Email to Overclock3D.net and asked what this is about submitting reviews etc. We shall see what happens from it :)

Koolance- 24th July 2008

Unfortunately, This isn’t much of an update, But will would like to welcome into the log my latest sponsor, Koolance:

http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020458263/dsc05954.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

After finding some very particular products on their site, I just had to have them, and after a few emails koolance kindly agreed to give me a generous discount. Here is what they sent me:

In the top of the box was the brochure, and I must say it is a very professional and god do I want some more kit that I’ve seen in there:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05942.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Also of worthy note is the packaging. Not only did it come with the usual Styrofoam stuff, but each item is vacuum packed:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05943.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Here we have the male and female connectors, I specified to have them threaded at the end rather than barbed:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05947.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

The perfect unity of male and female:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05948.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

These barbs will be used on one end of the connection:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05949.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

And attached:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05951.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Mounted in the power box:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05952.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Unfortunately I now need to redo the power box, However I was thinking about it anyway since I’ve discovered another cunning braiding connection.

Then, as you can probably see, here there is a little nut that goes between barb and connectors, It is simply threaded on both sides for attachment.
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05950.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Some aluminium discs, these will be used to construct the case feet:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05953.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

And finally, a shot of all the kit together:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/241020334079/dsc05955.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Many thanks to Koolance, I am incredibly impressed with their service and the amazing quality of their products. I would certainly recommend them and don’t know why more people don’t use them.

teknokid
24-07-2008, 11:19 AM
All the pictures of what I have done so far are up im afraid, Not much been done, it just takes soooo long to do anything. The biggest problem is getting all the kit together, so far ive got a large amount, but until you have everything you can do virtually nothing since you haven't got sizes to test fit with etc...

So far, its cost me around £500, but my room if full of acrylic, and ready to go after 3 more orders (another £150 or so to go) :D

teknokid

water cooling... around £600, then around £400 for the acrylic tools etc etc :)

Should be good though!

Getting sponsors is a big thrill as well, don't think I've given up on sponsors yet, I've got the ones im after now, but when I get to hardware......

You need to get in touch with Jim on the forums to see about writing reviews...

teknokid

26th September 2008
It’s been a long time since I’ve had any sort of meaningful update. Im sorry for all those who have given me support it’s been that long, however now the project is firmly under way again. Its been a bit slow as I have just started reviewing for OC3D, and had my first review published a few weeks ago and have just finished my 2nd. There has also been a shortage of funds, but a big cash injection into materials (£200) had meant that I’ve got pretty much all I need for the project and my room is stuffed full of modding kit.

Without further ado, my mornings work:

The design has changed some what from the originals, although is still based around the same idea. First of all I had to drill out the mount holes:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/261450332303/p1020645.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

These were going to be the victims of my saw :D (15mm thick bars of acrylic)
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/261453576499/p1020646.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

And where they will meet their death:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/261454243950/p1020647.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

Cut down to size:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/261454439647/p1020648.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

My first attempt at drilling (poor)
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/261455074560/p1020649.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

A 2nd, much better attempt
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/261455297580/p1020651.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

On the actual pieces:
http://upload.overclock3d.net/dwn/261456006066/p1020652.jpg (http://www.overclock3d.net)

All lined up:

Lining up and drilling the green under layer:

Mission accomplished:

4th October 2008

With the beginning of a new month, a bit of money in the bank and spare time this weekend looked perfect for modding. However, Soon after I woke up the heavens opened, at it was soon back to the drawing board. Practically everything I had to do was outside, and then I remembered this:

For £23.50 it was a steal of a case, although I could have got it for £15 if I had ordered sooner. I got the case in for spares, and the most important spare was quickly removed:

I quickly went outside and prepped the garage, shook the spray cans and got going with the primer:

It will soon be covered in black (tomorrow I hope) when I will update the log with the images of it.
Thanks for listening/watching/reading.
