Howdy peeps,

Just had a massive panic when i installed this drive.. it was showing up as a 33mb drive :(

Luckily after a good search i found this program..
h**p://blog.atola.com/restoring-factory-hard-drive-capacity/

This restored the full capacity.. I had the bad feeling I got a duff drive.
Running a full format on it at the moment. My main reason for getting this drive was to shift all the **** off this pc.
Get RAID going etc.
Any of you guys know anything good to do to test it?

Ta,

Louis

hey could i play ask where you have both of these harddrives for RAID? thanks mattz

Well.. I have moved all my music etc off this pc and onto my other one with the 1Tb drive.
Other pc is just a cheap e2160 with 2Gb ram. Using it as a server.
I have 3 x 500Gb drives in here so im using 2 to do RAID 0.
Certainly boots up quicker :)

Nice louis very nice! What do you use your server pc for if you dont mind me asking? This is my next venture, a home server.

louisbs
30-05-2008, 03:55 PM
Hiya,

Im using my server as media storage.. mp3's mainly lol
Being able to listen to the music via wireless is a big plus.
Also accessible by the 360 :)
Stored all my cds away.. good space saver :)
Dunno what else I could setup as the server is running xp pro.
It has pretty silent cooling too so i hardly notice it running 24/7.

Any ideas?

Louis

matz

i have thought about that for my 360 but now that they accept axxo divx codecs i just bung them on a usb stick

louisbs
30-05-2008, 03:59 PM
Yer.. But having the space just to dump everything u want on one drive.. no need to thumb sticks lol

Jonny2Bad
30-05-2008, 04:00 PM
Well they can run websites, game server (although the upload speeds could be a disadvantage), storage as your already doing, but google home servers for ideas and tips.

louisbs
30-05-2008, 04:04 PM
Wonder If I could run my own dns server..
or email server lol

Far as my upload speed I am on BeUnlimited and get 100k/sec :)
1.1MB/sec download

Dunno be worth a try to see though if your into your gaming, got a m8 who would know if its enough, dont think he comes on here too much these days though. I'll ask him when i get chance.

matz
30-05-2008, 04:52 PM
quality gaming servers use 100mb lines :)

louisbs
30-05-2008, 05:24 PM
hehe
But what other purposes could having a server benefit me?
Dont give a poo about game servers.

louisbe, do you think for me i should RAID two F1 500s or single F1 1tb after diskspace and speed on boots etc

louisbs
31-05-2008, 02:01 PM
I was going to use a 2 x 1Tb F1's on here LMAO... but i dont need the space on this machine lol
So i just used two existing drives.
The bootup in RAID 0 is very quick. I get into Vista  in about 20 seconds after post.
Ask me again in a few months and it could be a different story. :?:
The 1Tb F1's beat raptors on everything except access time i think.. check review below lol
And the 1Tb F1's are less money.. not a difficult choice there.
h**p://www.custompc.co.uk/labs/180183/samsung-spinpoint-f1-1tb.html << 86% and thats when they cost £180!

You have to remember if you use RAID 0 .. If one hdd goes down.. you lose the whole lot.. I didnt mind that as i have been running thses drives for a while already and they have been very reliable.

The choice is yours m8. All i think is 2 x 1Tb in raid 0 would be superb lolol :D

matz
31-05-2008, 02:39 PM
well what ive been thinking, F1 1tb or grab two 500s for raid. all what i would like to know is which one would be the best?

personally two 1TBs F1s are just way too much for my needs. i dont mind if one drive fails if its under warrenty because then i can go claim another and use none RAID for that time, would back up vital things on 250GB internal (encosured external)

Chewie
31-05-2008, 02:54 PM
sorely tempted to replace my media disc (maxtor Diamondmax10 200gb) with a pair of either 320's or 500's in a mirrored array (lost an external drive with thousands of photo's, not gonna do THAT agin if i can help it)

think 500's will be best for my needs :D

That way i can keep my music/videos and photos as well as my information backups safe across 2 discs ratehr than 1. Just means i wont be getting a new portable external for file movement off the network as it were.

matz
31-05-2008, 02:59 PM
im on about raid 0 here :P i said i would backup things on external, but keep my internals having it all on aswell ;)

louisbs

Id go for 2 of the newly out F1 640Gb's or 320Gb's .. same platter size as the 1Tb.. If the space isnt paramount :)
Ub3r quick no doubt :D
Go for that in RAID 0.
Blimey Matz we do nearly have identicle specs lol

god darn novatech, always so willing to provide.......

i went out for stamps, donuts and petrol..... came back with stamps, donuts, petrol, 1 extra SATA lead and 2 spinpoint 500's

now all i gotta do is move 148gb worth of music and vids and pics to the main drive, remove old 200, slap in the 5's and raid em up for mirror.

think i'll wait for a few hrs. just to be sure i dont wanna do nothin else ....

grr sasserfrassinrasserfrasser oh bolox to it.

Drives went in (just, about 1 cm between the top one and the edge of my 8800GTS 320) and each time i was able to select either RAID0 or RAID1 when i went and did CTRL-I.

But for some reason, niether time are they being seen by windows as a logical drive.

Intel Matrix Manager sees them, but where it says *System Volume* it says No.

I'm missing something, but i cant figure out wtf it is.

any thoughts? or should i just go and rip 1 out and stick it in an icybox e-sata case for my mobile storage.

EDIT!!!!!

Ok, sorted, Yea, it was created as an array, BUT, because it wasnt formated it therefore was not wholey there in windows.

had to goto disk management and initialise the disk then format it.

weee i love it when i forget things and have to ask other people.

Got RAID drivers?

Chewie
31-05-2008, 09:46 PM
heheh yea Asce i do have drivers, if i didnt i wouldnt have been able to set up the array the OS partition runs on.

Guess i shoulda replied to myself rather than edited.

God praise the Wonkanoby for pointing to me the error of my ways.

im thinking maybe, raid two 500s aswell. would i need drivers? ive digged out my floppy drive :P and found a spare sata cable

ive think ive found what i need in the manual, any chance of some benchmarks chewie, would like it to be compared to 1TB F1 :)

louisbs
01-06-2008, 12:59 PM
Depends on what o/s ur going for.
XP you will need a floppy drive.
Vista has the drivers so you wont need one.

why? raid makes the drives quicker than any normal drive, no contest, just because it's 1TB doesnt make it any different, i really dont think you understand raid matz, it will always be quicker than a single drive unless its something like a raptor

Chewie
01-06-2008, 02:39 PM
ok, i lied

new post :D

Just to see if it makes matz happy...

not sure if it matters about channel on this board and raid controller, but those 2 drives are on channel 0 and 1.

Just ran my primary os, RAID0 on 2 Spinpoint 200gb's on channel 5 and 6 (2 and 4 appear to be my esata and DVDrw), got the following.

Transfer rates.
Min 9.4mb/s
Ave 99.7mb/s
Max 125.3mb/s

Access TIme 3.2ms
Burst Rate 125.5mb/s

All i will say is there's gonna be little difference between what i got for the 500's In Stripe than in Mirror i'd say.

edit

both times my CPU usages were 4.6% or lower.

matz
01-06-2008, 02:59 PM
comparing the results above what would be better RAID 0 500s or 1TB?

the hardforum.com is saying for me to get 1tb , but what do you guys think?

oh shizzle that was raid1 ;P not raid 0

Jonny2Bad
01-06-2008, 03:18 PM
Raid 0 is an odd sort of thing, on paper and benchmarks it shows as a great leap in performance, but actually to the normal everyday running of a normal stand alone pc you can harldy notice tbh, yeah the boot up time is a little quicker, but loading etc is barely noticable, installing is a little quicker. But if you are connected to a network thats where you will really notice how much quicker the tranfers of files is etc.

Chewie
01-06-2008, 03:19 PM
Matz, the question is really, How much storage do you need?

As to wether a RAID0 array over 2 500's or a single 1tb, I doubt you'd reallllllllly notice much difference in seek tiems etc etc.

matz
01-06-2008, 03:27 PM
cheers, looks like im gonna grab the 1tb tommorow if there in stock. my 250gb has filled up quite quickly since january and most of it i would like to keep. 28gb left to go but as johnny said to me on xfire its must be slowing down due to that much diskspace left

Asce
01-06-2008, 04:34 PM
Chewie, do you need to install any drivers if your gonna have a RAID array, that windows isnt install on.

Chewie
01-06-2008, 04:50 PM
When you set the pc up, eg install windows for the first time, yes, you have to have a floppy ready with the relevant drivers available.
When prompted if drivers are required to press F6, make sure said floppy is in the drive ready to go.

Otherwise even with the raid configured and set in bios too, windows wont see the drive(s) you wanna install on.

Asce
01-06-2008, 07:24 PM
I mean if you installed windows on a seperate hard drive and have to others in RAID 1 will windows see it without using the drivers during install.

Chewie
01-06-2008, 07:40 PM
ah i get ya. hmm, if i recall you can install them when you install the intel matrix manager software, but im not 100% on that.

matz
01-06-2008, 08:28 PM
what is intel matrix? ive seen it suppported on my mobo

Chewie
01-06-2008, 08:43 PM
Intel Matrix Manager is what looks after your system for back up on mirrored arrays, as far as I'm aware.

Never really paid much attention to it, but then untill today, i've only ever created striped arrays, cause no-one i know has wanted 2 drives set for security with raid 1 8)

matz
01-06-2008, 08:45 PM

got two WD6400AAKS drives :) coming on friday, so i should get it up and running by 1pm. might need some help

creating raid?

do i have to do something in the bios first? then go onto xp and insert the disk? then fire away XP . is that correct?

Asce
04-06-2008, 09:49 PM
You will have to go into BIOS and enable RAID. Then go into the RAID Array utility with a command like Ctrl+I when it askes you. There you set up which type of RAID you want Stripped or Mirror (AKA Raid 0 or 1). You will need a floppy disk with the raid drivers on there before you install windows. But make sure you create the raid disk before you put the new hard drives in as ive found that you cant boot off the motherboard disk to create a Raid disk unlike the Nvidia Raid drivers where you just put the disk in at let it boot.
