View Full Version : different cpu
Hello.
I am looking at the various MB bundles that NOVATECH are selling.I am after a MB which has 2 IDE ports,1 floppy port,SATA of course. But which one.
Can you explain the difference between a Intel Pentium Dual Core and a Intel Core 2 Quad/Duo please performance wise that is.. :D
And which MB is worth the money?.
Cheers :D :D :D :D :D :D

If you want a mobo of your choice get 1 seperately and add the cpu!! Its not hard to fit the 2 together, be brave go for it!!
Hello Jonny2Bad,thanks for the advice.I have built many assebled many MB and CPU,but this build is on a budget, hense the question about the different types of CPU.
Can I ask what you think of this bundle from maplins, and what RAM you would recommend from novatech please?.All the below for £60
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Tab ... 73&doy=7m6 (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=221373&doy=7m6)
AMD Athlon 3000 processor
Socket 754 processor
ECS GS7610 motherboard
Includes heatsink and fan
Onboard integrated graphics supporting up to 128MB
AMD64 Hypertransport technology
Supports dual-channel DDR 266/333/400 up to 2GB
6-channel audio
10/100 LAN for for ultra-fast networking and broadband
Expansion slots: 1 x PCI-E X 16, 2 x PCI slots
2 x SATA ports, RAID 0 and RAID 1
2x IDE port for 4 x Ultra DMA133 devices

correct post which now makes sense

Not a chance, by the time you got some ram you might as well have got this http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... MBB-218946 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?MBB-218946)
And it will be far better than that from maplins.
I was looking at that MB :D .But it only has 1 IDE port, all the peripherals that will connect are IDE and not SATA.I have a DVDRW,HDD and a DVDROM.,like I said all IDE.But it does have a FDD :D
I already know the answer, but can you connect a HD and a DVDRW on the same IDE cable,as long as the HDD is the master?.
It is a shame really,it has all I need except the extra IDE.
Thats why I am considering the one from Maplins,it has 2 IDE ports.
Cheers Jonny2Bad :D

Well yes you can but obviously its not ideal, and the thing is that the amd3000 is and the chipset is very old now and a waste of money in my eyes. What will the pc be used for?
It will be used as a media PC,internet access and possible gaming, but I have my main PC with the BFG8800 for gaming.
I have my old Radeon 1950pro card,so PCI-E is necessary .
Currently I have an old SHUTTLE MB with a P4 2.4 CPU,with 512mb of RAM,it is the weakest part of the system.
All the other components are brand new,I used the old MB until I could find a suitable replacement.Once bought its finished .
If I buy the MB your suggested,I will have to buy a new SATA HD.I can connect the DVDRW and DVDROM on the same IDE cable, but the HD I have installed is IDE.
Cheers

Yes but the hd are so cheap these days a 500g is only £47 ideal for a media system. I really wouldnt go down the road of the maplin board at all, go for the new dual core system and for pratically the same money.
You will also find when it comes to updrading your CPU you wont find anything that fits as it is 754. Where have you seen a cpu with that??
I have decided that I will not purchase the Maplins bundle,I will when funds are available go for the one suggested.Thank you Jonny2Bad and djpc :D :D :D :D :D :D
One more thing,I will have to buy a SATA HD,are the drivers for the HD included on the MB disc,or will it just install like with an IDE HD.My XP home does not include the services packs, these are installed after.Cheers

Ok if your running an older version of xp then it will only recognise 127gb of a new hd, so when you update to sp2 you will have to open the other partition manually from the disk managment in admin tools. It would be cheaper to buy a sata dvd drive at £19 then you could use your ide hdd's.
thanks for the help all,very helpful :D :D :D :D
Another dumb question,do you require SATA drivers to use a SATA DVDRW???????

No m8 maybe a change or 2 in your bios to get it to boot from said drive but nothing else.

Hi, just wondering does anyone think there will be price cuts on the Q9*** series of quads coming in the next few weeks? im thinking about holding out for a reduced price Q9550 or going for a high end dual core otherwise

mam, it's worth bearing in mind that the AMD motherboard bundles described as nVidia 6150 had two IDE connectors last time I looked.
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?MBB-A522G
Nova often get the specs wrong. You could phone them to confirm.
xWilsonx, the £361 45nm Q9550 uses a faster bus and more cache and has SSE4 video encoding extension. The venerable £127 Q6600 G0 stepping will overclock nicely to perform just as well, in practise. So it depends on your motherboard and willingness to overclock really. http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?IL-Q6600E
Currently, dual cores are just as good for games, if not video encoding, so are worth considering too.

Cool, well ive seen rumors on the net that the Q9550 will be reduced in price to 200 pounds, but this processor was not in the list of reductions on the 20th July. So im now considering the E8500 which has been reduced to 124, im planning on building a gaming computer to play all the latest games, dont do any encoding or any extreme multi tasking so im thinking the quad maybe isnt for me. Got my eye on the Asus P5N-T Deluxe 780I motherboard at the mo, but im open to suggestions

What u recon?
Spend the cash and move up to the EVGA 780i. Much better layout and supprt.

Yeah with asce on that 1 the only nvidia chipset i would go for would be on an evga board.

Oh right, i thought the one i picked out was good enough, spose its worth it to spend a bit extra on the motherboard as its a very important component, shall i stick with the dual core for gaming or go for a quad, i dont really do video encoding or extreme multi tasking so im not sure i need one

Quad is nice for futureproofing all of us with quads have no reall need to upgrade for a good while yet, so my advice is if you can afford a quad now get 1, but if its a bit much on the purse strings then dual is fine for gaming, if not slightly better at the moment, until games become more multithreaded
Yeah with asce on that 1 the only nvidia chipset i would go for would be on an evga board.
Same here if i EVER move back to an Nvidia chipset.

mmmm, they dont have proper pics or specs for that motherboard on novatech
Go to Newegg.com for specs and images :)

How much of that have you bought? I still would go for the EVGA boards if possible.

Nothing yet, guna start buying parts next week, why do u think this board is better? (im a bit of a nub and this is my first build btw) i plan on running the dual core on stock speeds for a bit, then mayb tinker with overclocking later
Asus tends to get the reference board from nvidia and change it slightly. Evga stick to the nvidia reference and offer alot more support for updates. And they are always more stable boards. It would be a better choice to get the X38 P5E and use the £20 you saved to invest into the 4850.
thats why i love evga too :) and you get bonus features of steping up, from 680s to the 780s etc :)
