View Full Version : HDD Gone West

I've just taken a look at a mate's PC which refuses to boot and discovered the HDD is knackered. It's a WD 250GB SATA drive that I bought from the computer fair in Bracknell about 3 months ago. Unfortunately, I didn't get a receipt as the guy I bought it from said he was there every month. I can't wait until the next fair to get this sorted.
So, question is, can I deal directly with WD?
Try WD, we are not western digital :) but i think they might ask of proof of purchase.

Blimey. I booted from Hiren's CD and used one of the HDD repair tools on there and whatever it did worked a treat :P
I'll still take it back to the fair though as once an HDD starts to go, they only get worse.
Cheers

HeHe, and there was me thinking it wasn't worth suggesting a zero-fill and reformat with WD Data Lifeguard utilities:

Glad you fixed it! May have just been a software problem, you know. :P
im rembering this incase any of my harddrives blow :)
Could be worth checking the WD site to see if it is under Warranty and get a replacement from them.
read up, its fixed.

AHA
System7 or TTE - i have recently posted an article in Novatech PC forum about a D drive failure that hit me.
This "hirens CD" - can you explain more ? Is there some utility that I may be able to use in some DOS mode to try and recover some of the life critical data from my D drive ???

Search for 'Hiren' on a torrent site and download the latest version (9.4 I think). It should be about 94Mb and in ISO format. Once downloaded, use Nero to 'Burn Image to Disk' and boot from it. It'll bring up a simple menu with a whole bunch of tools that may be useful to you.
or if you dont want to waste a disk, magic ISO Virtual CD/DVD manager will do the trick :)

He could do but he won't have access to all the apps. Only booting from the disk will show all the programs on it. Some apps will not run over the OS and that includes the data recovery ones which he'll be using.

Sorry, I'm slightly off topic but the last time I had a torrent on my system (Bit Torrent) it left it crawling with spyware infections. I have changed my AV since and am wondering what is the best torrent to use and if there are any restrictions that need to be made regarding access. It would be useful to have some good utilities.
Bit Torrent is one of the best, its what you DOWNLOAD that would contain the spyware :)
i like it coz its easy i search for what i want on google, files + tracker all i need :)

I much prefer uTorrent as a client. It seems to download faster at default install settings and is a lot more informative than other programs.
its all about the seeders to get your best dl speeds not the client

Agreed, the client just acts as the gateway to dl it. Me i use Azerus Vuze for any large dl's (game patches etc). Depending on the file, depends on the speed, think fastest i've had on it was 600kb/s so musta been an awful lotta seeds on big connections that weren't restricted is all i can say.
if im downloading, uploads 1kbs lol

Logically yes, but I've run BitTorrent and uTorrent simultaneously on the same torrent and uTorrent is marginally quicker for some reason. And that's good enough for me.

Utorrent is by far the better client ive used, hogs less bandwidth, faster and just plain simple to use.

Thank you Jonny!! I have to agree. And so do all the 'pirates' here at work. Virtually all of us were using BitTorrent or Bitlord until one changed to uTorrent and the rest followed. Baaaa!... :D
