Hello
I have recently had to reinstall vista home premium on my system due to a system failure and I now keep getting windows explorer not reponding and restarting with programs running very slow. The previous install worked perfectly and I did nothing different this time except that the first install was on a fresh system, I did format the disk and the os is on a seperate hd to my files , the only difference is that I have added 2x 750gb hd and currently i havent installed sp1 but im waiting for my internet security company to release an updated version to cope, however again previous install had no problems without sp1
Does anyone have any ideas
Thanks

Have you installed all the drivers off your motherboard support disk?
Device Manager will tell you if there are any troublesome yellow marks indicating missing drivers. :|

Thing is, John, it's hard to visualise this without some more system details, like model or motherboard.
When you say Windows Explorer, you probably also mean Internet Explorer, don't you?
You certainly need the main chipset and LAN/ethernet driver here. Plus sound and Graphics drivers.
You also want to set up time and date, then your CD/DVD as first in bios boot order, then drive C:, then D: drive as storage. Save bios changes then exit.

Main system is an intel Q6600 Quad 2.4 with 2G RAM on an asus mainboard, graphics is an ATI sapphire 2600xt 512, 530w psu, Hard drives include an 80G for system and programs only and 1x 250 and 2x 750 for file photo and movie storage, Operating system is vista home premium and firewall and antivirus are trend micro pro
Sound and graphics drivers are present and correct not sure about others as I am at work at the moment
It is windows explorer that is working incorrectly not internet, when I open a program the top banner will intermittently say program not responding the task manager will appear and give options to close or wait, then a message will appear saying that windows explorer is not responding and needs to restart it will check for solutions find none then be ok again, somtimes I have to reboot as the system will not recover
Hope this helps

This is tough, John.
I'm still struggling to visualise this without knowning the exact motherboard. :|
In your shoes, I'd try and reinstall Vista with just DVD and 80GB hard drive connected. Set bios up to boot DVD, then hard drive, of course.
Reinstall Vista without any additional Firewall or Anti-Virus. Install drivers. Windows explorer is deep in the OS for finding files, and TrendMicro Firewall may be getting in the way at the moment. Vista includes a basic firewall, so worry not for now. :P
Then reconnect the other hard drives to access your file storage.
Then see how that runs. Then at the last, add Trend firewall and anti-virus, which I hope is Vista friendly. :?

I think it is just a Vista issue. I had that problem all the time. A re-install will only help it but for a short period of time then it will be back to normal, this was about a week for me. Also, I do not think you have any hardware issues, as it is more likely to be software. Vista is an absolute PAIN IN THE RIGHT BUTT CHEEK! If you want a stable system again I would strongly recommend that you buy yourself a copy of XP Pro and stick with that, Vista still has too many issues with it which need to be ironed out.
we get that a lot at work, network hangs are causing it I beleive, or other things, and thats under XP not Vista. Unfortunately it could be one of a million things, so solving it isn't going to be easily done on a forum. Have a look to see if any processes are not respondiong or if any are taking up all your CPU cycles.
