View Full Version : Would you like even faster boots into XP/Vista?
Hi guys, i discovered this on saturday while configuring a laptop to make it faster (alot of people think they already got a fast machine but you can make it even faster) So far its worked for brend and dude, for me it must only be a few extra seconds due to new install and raid.
Click start and go on run, type msconfig. then click on Boot tab (when you are on the boot tab click advanced options and set your num of proccessors and memory to the max of what your system specs is.)

Dude and squid have seen massive improvements, especially squid "third and a half faster :) what ever that means lol"
Could everyone please time in seconds on how long it takes to boot before/after :) would be great to see what other systems do, but for mine and most probz johnny it would not add up much

I said between a third and a half times quicker you dope! but it has been much quicker for me! although i have several reasons, i mean im still on this crummy ide drive so anythin could speed it up lol

No change for me lads sorry!
i would think there would be not alot for us, due to us being on raid and quads at a highish clock speed but for some people that have a different setup

not much effect for me (if any) took about 3secs off the total boot time. I need to get hold of a stopwatch and time it ^_^
i think it dont opt much for amd duals

XP Normal boot to firewall load: 58s... 8)
Modified boot for "faster" loading: 62s... :?

Mmm, I'm not sure about this. I've just tried it but won't know if there's an improvement 'til I reboot (which I won't do now as I'm in the middle of something). However, what concerns me is that when you click the checkboxes, the correct values are immediately given which leads me to think that they are already set correctly but not shown?
Plecebo effect anyone?...
Try the "NoGUiboot". It goes so fast you don't even see the windows logo.

Done some research on this and discovered that by default, XP and Vista already see the max number of processors and RAM. The switches recommended to be changed in this post are for debugging purposes and are for reducing what the O/S will see. So, no performance gains to be had, I'm afraid (unless anyone can prove this to be incorrect :? )

No noticeable difference on reboot times on two dual core machines.
TheMadDutchDude

Nope, you're right there Banger, I get exactly the same bootup time.

Worth a try maybe it's just Quad Cores.

Ive just done this, Ill let you know if it goes any faster.
I don't even have the option to change it from 1!

yh it does =P
when your at 3.8ghz up the voltage one notch maybet hats why :S

i had it at auto as thats the only setting it managed to boot in into Windows

Not on quads its doesnt read through the whole thread not many people have had a positive result from this at all lol. Good for you if its helped your boot times though.
btw my main pwns yours ;) no cheats or nothing ;)

i had it at auto as thats the only setting it managed to boot in into WindowsI wouldnt leave that on auto at all, those cpu's are very voltage sensitive, find out what it is running at and set it manually, auto volts is not a good thing, they can set them too high without you knowing.
usually the way to get round this is try 1:1 mem fsb divider ;)

usually the way to get round this is try 1:1 mem fsb divider ;)
i have a 1:1 mem to fsb divider...
okay ill clock up to 3.8Ghz, or i could go up to 4.0Ghz...
atm at 3.6Ghz my Vcore is 1.272 Volts... is that too high?
dude that is totally fine.. your ok up to 1.38v
my friend is on 1.3v at 4ghz so try that.
TheTranquilEye
20-08-2008, 11:54 AM
I can't get my E8200 faster than 3.4..
Mind you, I've got sh*tty generic 667 RAM..
I'm happy with that for the moment.
Jonny2Bad
20-08-2008, 11:57 AM
Yeah that is why then im sure, but youve done well to get the ram to go anywhere if thats the case lol
tried uping the mem voltage alil?
Jonny2Bad
20-08-2008, 12:32 PM
mmmm maybe not on generic ram, maybe a little more than it can cope with lol
TheTranquilEye
20-08-2008, 12:52 PM
I agree. If I want to go down that road, I'll get some decent RAM.
As I said, for my needs the O/C I've achieved is fine for the moment.
but 4GB of generic, OUCH!
TheTranquilEye
20-08-2008, 01:56 PM
Can't see the problem Matz.
Tom's Hardware ran their benchtest suite on a rig with '****' DDR2 RAM right on up through to the fastest DDR3 and the difference was 14%, which frankly doesn't make me want to rush out and buy some! Fine if you want to O/C but for everyday use, what's the point?
Jonny2Bad
20-08-2008, 02:06 PM
Totally agree if your noyt ocing then it really isnt that important, but with ram so cheap it doesnt make to much sense in buying it, when 4g of black dragons cost so little.
exactly what i was thinking.
TheTranquilEye
20-08-2008, 02:15 PM
TBH I bought a mobo bundle and it came with that RAM, so I just chucked in another 2GB of identical RAM. It's amazing stuff as I have it clocked at 425...
TheMadDutchDude
20-08-2008, 02:23 PM
Hehe, I had my generic 1GB stick clocked at over 555MHz (1110MHz in real) and only at 1.9v.. was starting to crash quite often so I got rid of the OC :?
TheTranquilEye
20-08-2008, 02:39 PM
If you had it at 1:1, you did well. I understood that most mobo's had a FSB wall after 500MHZ?
TheMadDutchDude
20-08-2008, 02:43 PM
Yeah they do, some don't even make it that far.
Yeah I was on a 1:1 ratio
Mr. Orange
20-08-2008, 03:06 PM
kk ill do 500FSB x8 = 4.00Ghz =] at 1.3V
It usually works when i set my RAM Timings to Auto.
better off it on 1:1, auto maybe 4:5 and give grey screen :)
TheMadDutchDude
20-08-2008, 03:56 PM
1:1 is the best one to go for, your ram will be at stock speeds.
1:1 is the best one to go for, your ram will be at stock speeds.
Wrong - read first ;) hes not on DDR2 -6400 800mhz hes on PC8500 ;)
TheMadDutchDude
20-08-2008, 04:29 PM
Ooh right, so what ratio is he on right now then? If I remember correctly, it should be on the 1:1.25 ratio then? :?
let him try it first pal ;)
Mr. Orange
20-08-2008, 04:32 PM
errrr...
how do i change it to 1:1.25?? or 1:1?
this should be in the overclocking cpu/memory section usually its on auto change this using -+ keys or arrows untill you get to 1:1 or 1:1.25 FSB Divider
Mr. Orange
20-08-2008, 04:48 PM
hmm i dont think it is, here are the images of what i have in the "Advanced" then "Jumper-Free Settings" In the BIOS
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/6272/dsc00090qo1.th.jpg (http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00090qo1.jpg)

well you dont need it, just up the fsb and 1.3v to get 4ghz ;) then go into cpu-z and tell us your multiplier most probz your memory can handle it no problem ;)
Mr. Orange
20-08-2008, 04:57 PM
oh and btw i managed to get to 4Ghz with the manual stock memory timings.
FSB: 500
Multiplier: x8
vCore: In the BIOS its set to 3.335. but in CPU-Z it says 3.12... I tried setting it to 3.0V but i got BSOD at logon. then i tried 3.125V in BIOS but loads of applications got errors :s, then i tried 3.250V and its working.
I am running quite hot idle though at 39-40C... and it goes up to 60C under load...
and my CPU Fan Is at max : 1520RPM
and how do i upload the images?
WTF I JUST REALISED... under the SPD Tab in CPU-Z, The "Max Bandwith" is "PC2-6400(400Mhz)". Is this normal? in whats supposed to be PC2-8500 RAM sticks?
Mr. Orange
20-08-2008, 05:03 PM
I dumped CPU-Z into Notepad, and heres the SPD Part, i'll neaten it up a bit...

kk, the max multiplier for my CPU has always been x8.... >>> Evidence.. http://processorfinder.intel.com/Detail ... Spec=SLAPP (http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=SLAPP)
google =]
and how do i make it at the stock rate?
Ugh my PC has gone to snail speeds :s and im still getting errors, time to go up a notch in voltage
gone to 1.35V and in CPU-Z it says 1.328V
whoops i misread my BIOS it was 1.35 not 1.5 :s

Jesus dude! Your CPUs max vcore is 1.38v... TURN IT DOWN NOW!
You have most probs hit the wall. My CPU runs faster at 3GHz than at 3.2, simply because the rest of the CPU can't keep up so it works slower.

That is called vdroop, you're nuts mate, turn it down in the BIOS right now :| and your clocks, it's a bit high.. what temps are you getting?
Mr. Orange
20-08-2008, 07:24 PM
whoops i misread BIOS it was 1.35V not 1.5V :s
anyway them temps were between 39C-40C idle, going up 45C under little load.... and my fan at full speed
i decided to stay safe as Internet Explorer Died again, so i took myself bak down to 3.6Ghz and 1.275V
and now the temps are 38-39C idle...
TheMadDutchDude

but it was on 3.8Ghz, I have a feeling My CPU Fan Is A Bit Loose :s, cause my temps have been goin up
which cooler do you have? even tho stock in USA can hold 4ghz.
Mr. Orange
21-08-2008, 10:56 AM
Thermaltake V1 << Bought from Novatech, the guy in the store reccomended it to me
johnny has that cooler and tbh it will work well witha dual core ;)
we shouldnt be worried about temps with them even on stock cooler so your fine.
Jonny2Bad
21-08-2008, 11:54 AM
Yeah the V1 keeps my quad at 42 42 39 39 at 3.4ghz and doesnt go over 60 at load, so it ca cope with the newer duals no problem, jr has it cooling his e6600 also and is at 30 30 and doesnt go above 50c at load.
tbh, my mate from USA bought theE8400 and he was doing 4ghz on stock cooler, so i think they might have beefed them up for these :) but he then bought a new case coz the other one had **** airflow and TR120x :)
Mr. Orange
21-08-2008, 01:29 PM
Because the Heat was makin me a bit nervous, i decided to open up my case, clean up lots of excess Thermal Paste =] take dust out of my CPU cooler and add in some Thermaltake RAM Coolers that does nothing, but it looks cool cause of the flashing lights =]
Now im down back to 32C =]
acourse you got to also think that this is not going to be the temps you get in winter due to the heat we have had earlier this year ;)
Mr. Orange
21-08-2008, 02:35 PM
We've had heat????? , i've been in south Africa for the past 3 weeks.....
yeah we did, ive been stuck in short/long thermals on the river for the past few days. :( where abouts you live in reading?
