He did it on air apparently, not liquid cooling O_o
Can AMD better this?

AMD have a couple of conroe killers up their sleeves (as sources say)

David T

Yeah I heard that, but nothing concrete as yet. We will have to wait and see, hopefully whatever they do release will have a decent L2 cache, 1mb at least and not that 512 they stuck on the low level X2's so thay can keep up, and it will overclock without melting

wait until you see the new opterons, they have huge amounts of L2 cache

What is with these huge overclocks at the moment? Are the manufacturers holding back on us? FSB of 460MHz!

Yeah I know, its kinda cool knowing you can squueze a bit more out of the thing if you need to though

stuff barely makes use of 2 cores at the moment!!!! will be good when people start developing for multi-cores though.

Re those Conroes...

Where is the pre-order button?

Whilst on the talk of Conroe, has there been anymore news on 975 supporting MoBo's? As a few of you may know, my MoBo has turned faulty (confirmed by an ex-novatechie, now my colleague; but yet to be confirmed by novatech) and so I am doing some homework on a new board.

There's sites saying that the 1.03G revision of the P5WD2-E Premium is Conroe-able, but I'm not sure.

I got the 1.03g version on the WS Mobo , and i really doubt it that it will be Conroe-able.

It is to do with the Voltage Regulators not going down enough to run the Conroe's

Oh well i dont mind getting a new motherboard at all.

Apparently, the board goes down to about 1.2v, and conroe needs something like 1.3v, but its that the vrm doesn't step down in 0.06v but it goes down in 0.12v? Is it possible that a BIOS could fix that?

PS - Those steps are off the top of my head, I can't remember where I read them.

It is German though, so I don't know if anyone could translate? (http://www.forumdeluxx.de/forum/showthread.php?t=229998)

Ya the steppings are 0.125V on the VCore. My board goes down to 1.175. Im sure it is possible with a BIOS update , but wether the motherboard manufactures decide to release one, (marketing reasons) is another question.

Im sure there are ways around it. It will be more clear when the CPU is released ;)

Yeah, true. Is the release for conroe still July 23rd? I don't think I can last that long...:P Here's hoping a BIOS will allow it to be compatible...Chances are it would I guess, but do you think Asus will remake the board and market it as conroe ready to try and grab more money?

I god **** hope so , i need some new gear like now. Got some cash to burn on something.

I might get a cheap X1900XTX then some Conroe gear ...

**** 23th July = too long to wait.

I'm hoping that we hear something more very soon (next week or two, but I doubt it) because my boards turned faulty...And dependant on the problem, I might buy a P5WD2-E Prem if I can find a 1.03G rev. by then.

Had a phone convo with Alan Walker today which continued via email. Very helpful guy, has been able to confirm the ram I thought was a duff, was faulty. Now I'm actually questioning the 2nd stick too. I've had no word on the board since though.

I was considering popping down tomorrow coz I'm not working, to see if they could A) test this second stick and B) give me a quick update on my board, but would you guys say it is better to wait for another email or phone call first?

Also, any news on conroe boards whilst we're in the topic still? I've not heard anything more on the 1.03G revision of the P5WD2-E Prem or on the P5B series yet - Anyone know any different?

Cheers guys :)

if your local bringing the memory in for test tomorrow should be fine. so long as the returns shop is quiet someone should be able to give the stick of memory a quick test.

the shop is normally very busy 9:00 - 11:00 saturdays so after that should be ok. if your not watching the england game tomorrow the should should be dead from about 1:00 onwards.

:? Thanks Danno. I guess I might see the tail end of a rush then, coz my Dad wants to see a man about a boat also before the match, and being a very time targetive man, it was "Up at 10, Novatech by 11, Boat by 11:30"...Somehow I can't see it being that precise lol :P

*edit* Went and asked for a status on my MoBo, turned out it was on the shelf ready for collection. Asked to have the 2nd stick tested, but couldn't be done coz they didn't have an adaptor or something. So with that, I just asked to refund and buy the 2GB Spec Ops Kit for the difference of about £27. Job Jobbed :). I'm going to put it all together on Tuesday as that is when I can take it all into work and do it in a PC repair environment. Anyway, I'll kill my posting here now as I feel I've kinda hijacked the topic.

</Me rambling on about returns>

I've seen on the OCUK website, that they have Conroes and Asus Conroe boards available for preorder. Seeing this, I asked my colleague who is an ex Novatechie, what the period was (when he was there) between the release of a Board and Novatech stocking them. He said it was about 2 weeks. Is that still an average figure?

Conroe CPU has no offcial release date apart from July / August.
From what i hear its leaning more towards July.

As for stock i am not sure how much stock of conroe intel has produced which means stock might be in short supply at time of release due to demand on a global scale and combined with that fact that Intel will no doubt provide its large OEM systems builds first.

We will have to see what happens but maybe our purchasing manager can come up with something more concrete

Should be interesting to see how large an order the hype generates, especially when the chips will only work with the 965 and 975 chipsets.

I bet a heck of a load of folks will buy 1 only to find its incompatible with their boards.

Anyone know the temps that conroe will put out? The 2.4GHz chip in particular?

*EDIT* 25/06/06 I was browsing a forum the other night and found a link that was an online euro retailer, and they had the Asus P5WDH Deluxe for sale. I'll try and find the link and report back asap

the heat output on the 2.4ghz conroe is about 60-70W

so i could imagine huge overclocks will be coming with being an owner of a conroe core.
ive seen the lower clocked conroes beating 2.8ghz fx 60's and fx 62's.
and they are only meant for normal desktops, and they arent the extreme editions

Thats the bad boy im gonna get to replace my P5WD2G-WS if Asus doesnt release a BIOS to support Core2Duo on my mobo.

Anyone got a feeling they'll go for a 965 board? Is it the one to come as second choice to a 975? €230 (~£160) seems a tad bit more than what I would feel comfortable spending.

conroes are flooding the internet now, ocuk are getting them in 1-3 days, and i suspect that this is the case with other E-tailers.
http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/07/14/co ... lon_64_uk/ (http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/07/14/core2_duo_knocks_out_athlon_64_uk/)
and if you go to
http://www.3dgameman.com
then there are plenty more links to chose from

in some tests the difference is barely noticable, ie. 2 fps difference, but, seeing that it was a 2fps differnce between the £700 AMD fx 62 and the £200 core duo, i think i can tell you which i would prefer buying (btw, the core duo is the one winning by 2fps)

It is a bad day for AMD, but good news, AMD are slashing prices across the board, £170 for an AMD X2 3800, and the prices will drop, AMD can only wait until their 4X4 system comes out

Ah thats just been put up.

I was about to come on here and moan about the moronic sites that keep posting x6800 performance stats.

People might like to see how fast it is, but 99% of people won't be buying one because it's too **** expensive.

That's still not the greatest of reviews though. There are 5 models of Core2 being released. Why no stats for the cheaper models? After all that's what most people will be buying, and hoping to OC.
They also have less cache too.
