Does have any ideas or suggestions to what we could do to or make the forum better or more user friendly?

i have been thinking, we have a few "non novatech staff" forum members that are very helpful advising others when they have a problem, most of the time the advice they give is spot on. at the moment we only have 2 usergroups, Novatech Admin Team and Novatech Technician. one thing i am hopefully going to add if its ok with the boss is a new usergroup for these members. any ideas what i could call the group?

does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions?

novatech helpers

i thought of something like that but it may confuse new users or cause problems.

if a user was to follow the advise of someone under the new usergroup and the advice was wrong or caused problems the user may hold novatech responsable. we are very happy that forum members are helping out on the forum but we need customers to know the advice they give is not always the advice novatech would give and because of this we (novatech) cant be held responsable if anything was to happen.

maybe something like Forum Advisor or Forum Helper.

forum helper/advisor may lead to people thinking that those people made the forums, you need something that people wouldnt associate with novatech or with the making of the forums

how about
the helpers

The Helpers could work. i will see if anyone else has any ideas over the weekend, if not i will sort out a new user group monday.

does anyone else have any ideas what we could call the new group, or any other ideas what we could do to improve the forum?

a new rank has been added.

Independent advisor - Independent advisors are members of the forum that are not employed by Novatech in any capacity but can offer helpful advice and insight in the many different aspects of IT. The opinions of these members are not necessarily the advice and opinions of Novatech, therefore Novatech cannot be held responsible for any problems or issues caused by following the instructions of these non-Novatech employees.

The members added to this rank are Taxation, Nox, djgandy and Chewie. More users may be added in the future.

does anyone have any other ideas what we could do to improve the forum?

Link back to the novatech site? Gets annoying having to type the address in over and over..

Thats a good idea, I think you should put the link to the main page were all the user links are (have it so that it opens up a new window). Add it next to user groups or somthing. Also How do you become an Independent advisor????

One more thing. I feel that users below 100 posts or somthing should be named as customers. Then every user from 200 to eg 500 should be called Fourm Members. Then 500 + Independent advisors. or something. I dont know. its just some idea's

Never thought it was good to offer rewards to the people who can spam the most personally :D

unlees they are 'novice spammer', average spammer' and 'extreme spammer' titles?

well, if everyone came onto this forum and asked to be an independent advisor, then there would be no way of knowing who to listen to, or trust slightly, because they have been picked because they show some computer knowledge, and have helped others

ooooo.

Novatech would love this.

PEOPLE DONT BUY SATA II HARD DISK'S, ITS A MARKITING SCAM!!!!

Never will a hard disk, not even a raptor hard disk rech that amount of data transfur unless it did it in big massive bursts from the cache buffer which would seem very dum indeed. SCSI hard disk's might get that amount of data off the disk to do this but the SCSI cable is even faster on data transfure anyways so who really cares. :D

Nox

buy SATA II - it supports hot swap - don't give a monkeys about interface speed :)

and not even the SSD HD's when they come onto the desktop market? would of thought those would be limited? :)

Yes, But also most SATA-1's also have the sata power connection intergrated onto the back plain. I have sata 2 and 1 disks here and they look almost identical, well apart from the extra 4 pin power connection on the sata 1's which is norm. unless this is just WD being fancy, i dont really know about the other manufactures.

I do remember though that old SATA 1 disks just had the sata connection and the 4 pin power connection only, althouh now up to date they also might be addting the sata power connection onto them as well. Hence why im seeing this on WD sata 1 and 2 disks here. Hot sawp :P:P:P:P:P:P:P

I was a bit miffed that I lost my IA status when the forum changed. Will it be re-instated?

Having answered quite a few posts re. drivers for Nova products recently (some more successfully than others), do you think it would be worthwhile creating a Support section with links to driver downloads for your products ?

Most other companies do and it would save a lot of grief for not a lot of bandwidth.

I always enjoy those forums where php has been reprogrammed to do a search and replace with amusing results for insider forum regulars. For instance:

"Here's a few pics of my new BMW" becomes "Here's a few pics of my new garish flashy tart-puller"

"I have an Energiser computer" becomes "I have an ovrpriced rbbish computer"

"system7." becomes "Mighty Guru of all things Tech. I worship His Shadow."

What?

apart from the thread about auto read marking, is the reputation system fully working? or should it be tweaked? i understand that the forum has recently being migrated to vb from php but i see a lot of people posting and their rep is not rising!!

(for those that are thinking wtf is he on about - you can give reputation to people and their posts by clicking on the scales under their name the more positive rep a person gets the more green pips they get and their reputation giving powers increases - you can also give negative should you think it is appropriate)

do people actually bother with the vbulletin rep system? I know over on TPR, when it first came out there was a lot of usage, but it hardly gets touched now it's been there for so long.

i have a thanks button system on my site which gives a fixed amount of rep, which most people use instead.

I gave you rep for that "fox" thread :D

it depends on how the reputation has been set up and how many points you get for certain things. Alot of the set up options are time based so as they have only been using this forum software for a few weeks it will take time.

What about what OCUK do and have a forum section where only the OP and staff can view and respond to the posting? Just been on about the probability of Gibbos mailbox getting choka block with PMs and he has missed one or two it seems.

Split into two:

"Cut Me A Deal" and "Where`s My F*****g order" ... ya get the idea ;)

I used to run a vB forum a few months back, had over 2 Million hits in 3 months, and we had this plugin that would give you a currency everytime you made a thread or posted, I can't remember what its called, but it allows you to create your own currency for your forum and maybe we could use it on this forum to buy a privelage such as custom user titles and other fancy things like that.

EDIT: It's called vBcredits
