Hi I have a Vortex Pro from 2005 P4 3.0 with 512MB Ram (basically and out of the box job) I have built too many PC's in the past and have got bored with it anyway, this one has been fine for home use I dont do the gaming just web work and stuff but I started running out of mem so I bought another stick of Novatech mem 1GB 400MHZ (stock code RAM-40/1G) put it in tonight beliving they did not have to be banked as in the old days but it doesnt work with my existing ram.

XP fullypatched

In Dimm 1 I had 512 pre fitted ram
Dimm2 I put the 1gb stick

PC beeps and will not boot

Took out the 512 and jsut used the new stick and it works.

Swapped over Dimm slots and still the same they both will not work together!

Any ideas I did buy the PC with the intention of adding additional RAM but didnt think I would have bank them.

Its got a foxconn MB and just seems to be a bit slow compared to my old early P4 with 512MB downstairs.

Also processor seems to peak quite alot without asking it to do too much, the system is clean of malware/spyware and virus (although i am using Notrton!) im do not run anything unusual just office 2003 etc...

Cheers

Paul

the problem looks like a compatability ssue between the two sticks. if we were to have the 1gb stick back and swap it for a different brand bit of memory the problem should go away.

Have you checked your motherboard instructions??
should tell you any incompatibility issues.

also, the type (single sided or double, mathematical layout etc) and speed need to be the same.

Your motherboard could be auto sensing the speed of ram, so they need to be the same.

you would be far better off putting 2 sticks the same in anyway
(plus you then have 2 Gb ! )

Charlie Fan is the best salesman at novatech !!!
(talked me out of at least 3k in 3 months)

may be worth trying the corsair memory novatech sell, but it is slightly more expensive... seems to have less compatibility issues.

Had pretty much the same problem with a bit of RAM-40/1G, its made by Delta at the moment, same as the bit of 256 I already had in there.
It would not boot into the OS with that stick. Tried various clock variations and timings, even under clocked it but it would not play.

I know my mb didn't like the 2x 400mhz I had in there before as it would only run at 333 but the current 256 is ok at 400.

Its down to simple incompatabilty, the mb has had the bios updated which was supposed to fix ram timing issues but it missed this one

Gonna play it safe and go duel channel 512 at 333.

*** update***

Anyone having problems with the RAM-40/1G I would recommend the CSR or 2x 512 Hynix (RAM-40512H) as a replacement.
