Hey guys I was looking on OC3D and I came across this...

Looks like we are going to have to upgrade our motherboards to get the most out of the new CPUs, though I think it is a stupid idea. Why can't they just stick to the LGA775?
Wow, Intel Quad Core coming to laptops too, the next gen of gaming laptops will be here soon!!

Bugger, LOL I wanted to get some good news.. nevermind, I will find something... one day ;)

It was news to me! :P
The high end is going to use the new socket called 1366 and "nehalem" Bloomfield quads, but for the rest of us there will be some good buys like the new budget E5200 (FSB800 2.5 GHz with 2MB cache and 45nm build) which goes to 4 GHz overclock.
The lowdown on "Bloomfield" is here:

This site must be getting hammered at the moment, but the bottom line on Nehalem seems to be about 20% improvement in raw grunt, and about 50% in multitasking. :P

7, will that E5200 do 4GHz on air or do you have to spend a bit and get WC?

I don't know the details on the E5200, Dude. But presumably the improvement is due to the Wolfdale 45nm build. It has a multiplier of 12.5.
It can't be getting all that hot compared to Quads under load, can it? I'm sure air cooling will be OK. It's not that much different from an E4700 if you think about it.

I guess not, I was only wondering to be honest. Quad is the only way forward IMHO I'm not settling for anything less than a Quad when I get my next CPU (come on Feb '09!)
So, the Quads need the 8pin 12v to run stable don't they? Means a new PSU for me as well.
they dont need it but its advised from loads. just means less power from the board i think

I just reread the benchies on Bloomfield and socket 1366.
It is, in fact, about 40% faster in raw grunt at a given clock compared to the current crop of Intel Quad CPUs.
This is due to the memory controller being on the processor, a la AMD, if I follow it all. :?
yeah so lets say the more dimms sticks you put on the board the more stress the cpu will have to cope with ;)
personally i will not be buying untill games and other things evolve.

I think it's a whole new ball game with memory on these babies.
Something about three channels of DDR3.
Doesn't sound cheap! :?
when this comes out and acourse its ready for what i need i am sure the memory would be cheap..
what does everyone think about heat of this cpu?

I expect it'll run hot enough, matz. :)
I don't know what you guys think, but I am less than excited about this new socket 1366 technology. Looks very expensive to implement to me for 40% performance gain. That 3 channel DDR3 thing could fall flat on it's face unless prices come down a lot, and that's got a lot to do with the improved performance with these CPUs.
The roadmap suggests most of the lower end won't change much for 12 months:

Be interesting to see what AMD come up with. I'm unconvinced. It has the look of Dinosaur-like overcomplexity as does the huge new NVidia GTX280 graphics chip. :?
