If you have a Novatech PC ot Laptop that came pre installed with Windows XP home or Pro and you are receiving an error saying that the copy of windows installed on the PC is not a genuine version below is information about and a fix for the problem. Its been reported that the below steps have also worked with OEM versions of windows.

The copy of windows supplied with the PC will be a genuine copy, the product code on the side of the PC was supplied by Microsoft.

The error could be being caused by the fact that we used to use system locked preinstalled (or SLP for short) PC's. This is where the PC is already activated and does not require windows product activation by the customer. The way Microsoft did this was to issue each OEM a Volume Key. However since then MS have now come out with the Genuine Advantage Program which is their way of further combating pirates but at the same time plays havoc with SLP.

When you received the PC did you have to enter the product key off the side of the PC to activate windows? If you did not you probably have one of our SLP systems and this can be resolved as follows.

Select start and then run.
Type in to the run box the following. (You must do this exactly as I describe for it to work)

c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe /a

This will bring up the windows product activation window.
Select the Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate windows option.
Click Next
At the bottom of the next page select the Change Product Key Button.
This will allow you to change from our SLP key to your unique key from you COA enter your product key from your COA in to the 5 white box's When you have done this click update. If the key was entered correctly you will return to the previous page. If you made a mistake an error will be shown.

Once this is done, you can close the window.
Now repeat the run line again as described above.
You should now be able to activate Windows over the internet or by phone.
Once you have completed Windows Product Activation, you should no longer have an issue with windows update.

When you run the MSOOBE.EXE /A command if a box comes up saying you have already activated windows if you click ok and reboot the PC this should solve the problem.

If you still have problems please click the link below and follow the on screen instructions.

Hiya,

A friend bought a computer from you guys at Novatech. I got him hooked up to the internet, went to activate windows xp, that came with the pc...

It says the key is already registered with another computer, and need to buy a new one. I am using the key that is stuck to the side of the PC.

I have tried the above instructions which did not work, is there any other way of doing this without calling Microsoft? My friend works 9-5, microsoft help desk is also 9-5!

Or am I doing something stupid? I'm not an XP fan (still using Win2K), just trying to help a friend out.
