Novatech 54G wireless router/AOL Instant Messenger webcam

I'm trying to have a webam conversation with my mother in law but AOL IM is saying that I she failed to respond.

I had exactly the same problem and it turned out to be the firewall on my wireless router (Netgear WG 824, OSX Tiger) and when I used port forwarding on the router (ports 1024-5000) it corrected the problem.

Can anyone tell me how she could set up something similar on the Novatech?

Make sure that the laptop is connecting on the correct ports. Forwarding is done on the router so this should already be setup.

Some ADSL routers also disable port forwarding if you enable the firewall, ie my linksys one does - somewhat annoying! but worth remembering.

Is it possible to disable the firewall within the router and reply on the Windows firewall?

have you tried msn :P , it works fine for me, and it works for alot of people that i know

I have a Mac and it seems that most IM programs only have video capability for Win. You can use an AOL IM account with iChat, which incidently is far nicer to use than Windows AOL IM.
