Hi

I have a Samsung DVD/Cd drive which is behaviing tempermentally. When I load a CD/DVD into the drive the 'normal' wurrring noise and light flash but then they time out. If I try and access it through explorer it says load a disk when one is already in there.

I do not think it is the drive but Vista. The drive is brand new - I only exchanged it yesterday because I thought it was defective but it worked fine when I did a Vista clean install (yesterday) and Vista has behaved strangely by creating a Floppy Disk Drive a: when I last logged in and I do not have one fitted?

I have followed Danno's thread 'CD / DVD Drive not detect Error code 39 or 41' but do not seem to have the same problem as my registry has no filter entries.

Mine looks like this: http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/9931/regynk8.th.png (http://img529.imageshack.us/my.php?image=regynk8.png)

I am baffled and would not mind some advice to help narrow down the problem.

Does it have problems reading some disks, or all disks.

Have you checked for updated firmware for the drive? This may help resolve read issues.

Modern boards often have two drive controllers to complicate things, and still all the old IDE jumpering issues that get people in trouble. CS jumpering is most foolproof. Clearly your drive can read an install DVD just fine. The install order for software usually goes as follows:

OS
Chipset Drivers
Sound
Network
Graphics
Firewall
Apps
Windows Updates

You might think about when the problem starts occuring. Nero, Roxio and Media players often produce issues with drives and sound. Probably Windows restore would be the simplest fix since various uninstall methods can sometimes miss elements.

Another simple fix, and this goes for any troublesome device really, is to try uninstalling the DVD/CD drive in device manager and reboot. Windows may make a better fist of installing the driver next time.

You have 30 days to activate, and there's little point in doing so till you are totally happy with the stability of the install. Some programs are more trouble than they are worth, and then you look for alternatives. Then you can back up an image of your install to get you back to an easy square one in case of future woes. The phantom floppy is a bios thing. You can probably disable it in there.

Thank you for both your replies. Just got back from camping in the rain

The fault occurs with all DVDs.

I installed the software in the following order (I write it down each time - quite sad): OS, drivers (from MB disc), graphics, anti virus (AVG), and then office 2007. **** - I did not record when I loaded updates.

I did not load any other media players and have already tried uninstalling via device manager and letting windows do its stuff on restart. I will try Windows restore later and uninstalling again. I have not played around with any jumper settings but will check again. The other thing I might try to do is add my IDE DVD drive from old computer and see if that works.

Solved it by using an IDE drive. I replaced the SATA one - and did a fresh install. All seems to be working well now.
