Greetings,
I have just bought a load of hardware from Novatech to build my own PC for the first time :D It is all at home waiting for me to finish work!
I would like to install my old HDD as a backup/slave on my new rig. This is partly to recover old photos etc which I can no longer get to as my the mobo died on my old machine.
Is it possible to install the old HDD (with all its files and operating system) on to a new machine without any conflict? It's an old IDE drive and the new one is SATA II. The new motherboard I have is a MSI P35 NEO2-FR.
Thanks for any help/advice you can offer

Nice motherboard, I have one myself.
You can do this, no problem at all. One thing though, make sure you boot up from the SATA drive and not from the IDE drive. It won't boot. Simple really.
Make sure when you come to install Windows again that you don't install it on your old hard drive, or all your photo's are gone for good.

i would say it is a good idea to deactivate the partiton before you move it across or to install you new rig first then transfer the old hard drive. Moving hard drives with active partions can be a pain when it comes to what the bios decides to boot or not. inactive partitions will not boot.

Better idea than deactivating it.. just don't connect it until you're ready :)

Thanks for the advice guys.
I will move it across once I have everything up and running.

As well as the P35 NEO2-FR I got:
Antec nine hundred case
hiper 630W PSU
Intel Quad Core Q6600 95Watt G0 Stepping
2GB Corsair 6400XMS DDR2
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA II
HIS 4850 512MB GDDR3
Samsung Lightscribe S223Q
I plan on picking up a new cooler when I've got some money. I put it together last night and got it to POST. Phew! It was a bit of a tight squeeze but i got there in the end. Tonight is software time.
I've no idea how you guys keep all the wires so well managed, I definitely need to tidy it up a bit.

Nice system.
Congrats!
Cable management is easy, use the supplied holes in the motherboard tray, and use cable ties to keep them nicely together for the different ones, depending on where they are going. If I can find mine I will send you a link!

Just make sure you do NOT have your ipod plugged in, coz i could of installed XP on my 80GB Classic and it had to be restored, luckily i had my full backup of much of my music:)
