is there a way of safely dismounting usb memory sticks or camera media from the pc with a keyboard shortcut rather the slow and awkward way of click on the green symbol on the task bar which takes ages?

For usb memory sticks and modern flash cards etc, there should be no reason you need to click anything.
As long as you are not currently writting data to these drives then directly unpluging them will not cause any problems, PCMCIA cards etc can cause odd behaviour if not unplugged properly but memory sticks are fine..

This is true however some devices and some usb sticks mght corrupt data if they still believe the stick is in use.
There is a solution below that works fine for xp.
right click the desktop and select new > shortcut
A prompt box should come up saying type in the location for your item.
in here put;
RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
then save the shortcut under a name of your choosing click ok and you now have a desktop shortcut to dismount you devices
