Hello,

I recently purchased a GeForce 8600GT PCI express 512mb graphics card from Novatech. When I installed it into my Windows Vista computer and plugged the monitor into the port at the back it would not display, as in there was no picture on the monitor. So we reconnected it again and the graphics card just to see if it could have been loose. It worked for a bit, and i was able to play a game with the new graphics card. BUT. After returning to my computer an hour later and switching it back on, again the monitor just would not display anything and before booting up the computer made a strange subtle clicking sound as if it were trying to find the graphics card. After this there is no picture on the monitor, it is just blank.

We tried reconnecting it again and checked the sockets etc...but they were all tight and fine. I have had to put my old card in again. Im just wondering is this a faulty graphics card and should i send it back for a refund or can Novatech give me a replacement graphcis card of equal power?....

Thanks,

Gemma.

It's likely a power supply problem or a faulty card, Gemma. I take it you were correctly plugging graphics into the graphics card.

The 8600GT is not too demanding at about 5A and doesn't need a supplementary power connector. But that may make things worse because the entire computer is then mostly running on the 12V1 rail of your power supply. If it's only rated at about 15A on 12V1 on the power supply sticker, that would explain it. My 8600GT crashed most horribly on an old and cheapish 350W power supply.

A cure for a lot of boot problems is to take out the coin sized CMOS battery for two minutes with the power unplugged at the mains, and then running bios setup again. What is the computer model, and the power supply model number or rating? A lot of shop bought computers just don't have enough power supply for upgrades.
