View Full Version : Amd Notebook Will Not Read CPU Speed Over 800Mhz

The notebook manufacturers have set the computer to run at this speed from the bios before any power saving is initiated. To stop the laptop from overheating and/or locking up.
It seems that Windows gets its information of the max CPU speed from this point, but the readout windows gives is incorrect. So when in Windows and the power saving is initiated, windows will caluclate the max cpu speed with multiplier X and as the multiplier drops the CPU speed drops.
Now. If you use a program that reads the cpu information directly from the CPU/BIOS (i.e. CPUD, CPUID). it will tell you the correct reading.
800Mhz is actually the minimum speed of the CPU. So don't be worried if you think you have the wrong CPU. you infact have the correct CPU running at its intended speed being read by windows incorrectly.
I suggest if this stops you from installing any game/application software to contact the supplier of the software to look for a bypass to this (Some game manufacturers program minimum requirements into the installer so it will read the information from windows rather than doing a true scan).

I am relieved in a way...
I spent almost a grand the other day on this baby... and was shocked when i saw 800Mhz cpu speed!
Screen shot below:

My BIOS picks it up as the correct speed ... but is there any driver I could install so windows could pick up the correct speed?

It appears that your notebook may not suffer the same fate as many. normally to make the CPU speed clock up in windows is to disable all power saving options. Sometimes there maybe an option in the bios to do this without disabling the power saving options in windows.
give this a try and let me know how it goes.

from my laptop its the same as what you do on a pc.
start>control panel>performance and m................>power options

Arrr.. So if i disable the power managment.. i may be able to let windows show me the full clock speed?
Screen shot is below of my power Man. Where do I go from here? What do i disable/enable ? - or what do i look out for when im in the BIOS mode?

Does it really matter?
It's there to save your battery power. Maybe run an intensive program and it will show it at a higher speed.
Or run a real benchmark?

tbh laptops arent meant for gaming, mainly for word processing etc.
play around with the power settings to see what suits you
the quicker the processor the less time your battery will last

Ermmmmmmmmm it does matter .. to me
I would like to see the full clock speed..... lol..
Just a question.. if I wanted windows to show me the full clock speed, do i have to disable the power settings?
I am not really fussed about the battery level, becuase I mainly use the power cable.
Thanks,

I have installed this program found on another part of this forum
http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-131.zip
I have just run it on my Crossfire 2 and it shows 2200mhz

disable power settings, but that will cause more heat.

I'm sorry to be asking a question that I hated being asked when I worked with you guys. I'm having problems with this on our 255/259 chassis laptops. It wouldn't be a problem but the laptop on the teachers desk can't play audio files over 128kbps or video. I've tried speedswitchXP but the realtime monitor reports a freq of 798mhz/4x/199mhz FSB as does CPU-Z. All power management is set to always on. There isn't anything in the BIOS but I have tried loading the optimal settings anyway...
Even running Prime95 then CPU-Z the freq ticks between 798.2 and 798.3... I really think that there is something wrong

No. The fix is simple. Install the correct CPU driver updates from AMD> All ok now.
Download and run CPU-Z from http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-139.zip This will give you the CPU installed in the 'Name' field at the top of the page - goto http://www.amd.com and find the latest driver for the CPU installed and restart.
For me it doubled the multiplier - now to roll it out to 35 laptops on a Ghost...

This is actually a problem on Ubuntu, which on my (Fiery) installation automatically set the CPU into powersave mode of 800MHz. Linux being linux, you can alter the settings (quite) easily; this walkthrough maybe helpful:
http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/11/04/ ... y-scaling/ (http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/11/04/enabling-cpu-frequency-scaling/)
Anyone reading this may also have the abominable sis graphics card, and a hard working man has made driver for this to allow dual head mode / 2 screen mode:
http://www.winischhofer.eu/linuxsispart1.shtml#12
It goes without saying but, if you use the guides, read ALL the instructions VERY carefully, missing a line can mean having to go into recovery mode. I know.

No personal disrespect meant, but you think support and service is telling your customers to go and google some application?
?

I think its a reasonable enough responce, what would you suggest? The amount of issues that can be resolved by a simple google search is staggering and remember you can give a man a fish that will feed his family for a day or give him te means to catch his own fish so that he may be able to feed his family for a life time!

I agree. By giving you an answer, it would basically be elaborating what's already stated elsewhere in less detailed format. By giving links or telling to examine searches in google would give more specific answers, and even extra information that may be deemed quite informative. I think it's ample enough of an answer to dilute multipe extra questions given upon which may also already have been answered in a more thorough format.
