Can't post a screenie because I'm at work but I'm on VM 20mb.

I get, on average, 19000+ download and 746 up. Due to their throttling (which is what I'd like to do to them..) it does drop to below 10000 at peak periods.

TBH, as I've said before I didn't notice a difference in real-world performance going from 10-20Mb. then again, I only pay £15 a month, so can't complain..

im just supprised and confused how my upload is higher than some of you with big download speeds when my download is just over a 1/10 of what its meant to be :?

Jonny2Bad

i phoned up virgin media and this is what they have to say:

"According to my check with BT, your line can only handle 500kbps"

:( i only live about 3 miles away from my local exchange, which i didnt think was that far. But apparently the state of my phone line (outside of my house) is bad :(

the person at the end of the phone got angry at me when i suggest my price should be cut to a tenth  - nice customer service ahhy

anyway he gave me a phone number to call, and then to press option 3 then option 2 to an annoying automatted voice, then i had to wait 10 minutes whilst listening to some horrible "VALLERRIEE" music by amy whitehouse :(

after 5 mins i got a message saying, the customer service people go home at 9.00, try again in the morning

looking at the clock it was exactly 9.00

Jonny2Bad

Tiscali 8mb broadband. I used to get 6.5mb out of the 8mb capacity. But, for the past few months I've only been getting between 2 and 3mb. Plus, the connection is very tempormental in the evening. I will phone them and enquire as to why when I have a spare 2 hours to queue on the phone to speak to someone who probably can't help me.

aslong as it is not just me jaymer :P

It's annoying though as i know that when i first got it it only dropped to about 3mb/s when it was being capped, but now im being capped below 1mb/s which is rediculous, as it actually has an impact when generally browsing. Might give them a ring though, as i've got the unlimited phone call package and their full speed internet package but im still being capped into the ground

To be honest Speedtests really don't give you an ideal picture of what your real speeds are only your throughput to the test site which itself can be subject to delays.

All depends on the routing / service provider / time of day / hosting thats hosting the website etc to what you get on average at any point in the day plus how many people share the connection i.e. the Contention Ratio.

I can do a speedtest and get a silly low figure but do a download from a university or major download site and get full speed there for it can be somewhat mis-leading.

You will generally be connected to the BT HUB at a certain speed and that should be reflected in your Routers software interface as your connection speed and in reality you may get near that on occasions but day to day its subject to the above and this you might only see 1/2 .. 1/4.. 1/8 of the potential speed dependant on what and where your surf.

TBH UK seems to be in a melt down and the infrastructure is struggling.

I'm on an up to 8meg service (BT Line), but due to the distance I am from the exchange, I can only sync to get a 3.5meg profile. With Aquiss (Entanet Reseller), I get maximum speed most of the time, happy enough. Sadly, in my area there are no cable providers so this is the best I can ever hope for!

I think we are about 2 1/2 miles by road from the Cromer exchange. When we first tried for broadband with BT, they told us we were too far (I suspect the real issue was a line sharing device). We got it by ordering broadband with another ISP but I don't have great expectations for this line.

I'm suppoed to have a 8MB connection with Tiscali but have never connected above 6MB. On average I'll connect somewhere between 4-5MB, however, recently this seems to have plummeted to about 2-3MB. Not sure if it is an issue with Tiscali or the old London copper wiring - it gets noticeably worse under bad weather conditions, although BT say it is not an issue with them ...

To be honest, I'm surprised at my ping, it's usually a little lower (<60)

Paying for an ancient 2.3mb/s Tiscali package, I should probably find the time to upgrade. 'Specially since, once a week or so, it cuts out completely.

darren, this image is edited, first the Newnet max speed is 20Mbit, second, NO! ISP other than a server connection offers upload of over 5Mbit.

so whats the deal here. cant take having a slow connection, or just want to look better then everyone?. and with them uploads, your ping is not 21 milliseconds, well under that. iv seen my conneciton with much better at 14!.

check my signature for answer to original question.

He works for Novatech m8 and that is a server connection, should`ve researched that before you had a go it him ;)

yeh if you read it properly i did say that it may be a server connection

Should`ve left it at that then instead of adding:

yes i reserve the right to be silent, but just one thing i did say i may be a server connection. and now look at my results, just 5 miles down the road, at my boarding school (where i spend most my time, and play the most on this connection) better than the novatech server i believe ;-)

i dont have a clue where the school gets this, but i want it at my house!

Seems my ping is horrible. I've downloaded PingPlotter, and it reports a packet loss of 50-100% sometimes on some "hops".

I don't understand it at all though, tried me best. Networking and me just don't get along.

At what should I be looking to improve my ping then?

You're probably being throttled Virgin do this a lot, time for a new ISP. :)

Yes! at my house i have Virgin Media 10Mbit, and the download limit is just stupidly low. 700MB per 5 hours at peek and 1.5GB at off peek.

i can download 700MB in just under 10mins with any P2P network. just stupid. ild rather a monthly download limit, but im not at home much, usualy at school check below! :fight:this is how me and my sister always end-up at home, squabling about who hogging the percious bandwith. VM's customer service also sux eggs. so rubbish, you get nowhere. just passed from pillar to post because no one knows the answer to your question.

As for wiring and faceplates, I have no idea.

This is important. Many folk sitting with the ringwire connected and poor BT installations that just magnify noise on the line. BT did recently market the iPlate which purportedly cut down ringwire noise (which is#3 orange btw) but I prefer to remove it completely and fit an NTE5 (though I`ve never personally compared the two side by side).

I went thru my Dads house (including all extensions) and actually doubled his sync speed ... **** poor telephony wiring job was done on a new house, quite embarrassing really :\

ask them to test the max speed on your line. even though they sell it to you, in the small print of the contract there will be part that explains subject to maximum line speed and traffic within your area.

Paying £9.99 to Tiscali for this, can't wait to switch. Annoying thing is two months ago I did one of those speed checkers that you find on ISP websites to see what kind of speed I could get with BeThere, and it said I could receive 5Mb/s. Did the same test yesterday and now it's saying 2.5 Mb/s. :( It's not like I live in some remote area or anything (unless Watford is considered remote, lol).
