I've spent most of tonight tidying up the flat. Frankly, I'm shocked I let things slip so badly.

The system7 supercomputer is freed from an inch of dust and the horrible Novatech "SLI" EVGA 8600GT graphic card that caused my own "Lost weekend".

What on earth are you meant to do with all the wires and old disks?

One day, I might, just maybe, tidy up.
Until that day this is what I work in.

I really like Conrad's setup. It has a homely feel. Perhaps I need some beanbag teddies or something? And yes, Nox, it is Strongbow apple juice. Part of my 5 a day, you know. Got a terrible headache this morning though, so I think this healthy kick is overrated.

Anyway, look what I found in a green shoebox whilst tidying! I haven't run this for 30 years, and I think my young nephew pretty much wrecked it. This is what we blew our pocket money on before the days of hot gaming PCs:

Hi System. :D

Nice job you did there.

Reminds me i must do something with mine, just never seem to get the time though.

Love the train set, reminds me of the one our dad had we had some fun with that the flying scotsman running round the main loop and a small 040 saddle tank shunting in the sidings, geez they were the days.

The monkey and wild dog are teddies, obviously. But the lions head, the monkey skulls, baboon skull, hyena skull and leopard skins on the left wall are all hunting trophies from "back in the day".

Nah Chewie got custom filters on the fans. So probably due a clean out but those intake fans are a dust collectors, even up off the floor.
And yeah the fan was caught just at the right time how mad is that didnt even notice lol. So i guess not just the outside of the desk needs doing the inside of the pc also. Jeez A Dads work is never done i guess.

Ok, there ya go, 1 really compact pc space with some mess removed off the main desk.

Top boxes hold power leads, usb leads and miriad other junk.
My speakers to my Logitech 2.1 (which my daughter lovingly punched the cones in for some poxy reason known only to her, still pissed about that), the sub is behind the silver tins

Rusty tins have some old game boxes (star wars Yoda Stories, man thats old) in them.
Folder is my SAP book from work.
Big pile of games on display.
My JVC MG50Ek next to my crummy sky router. and my equally Suger Honey Ice Tea *SatNav*
Large black *filing container* for all those bills and crud.
The missus's sewing box (no, i don't know why its there).
FInally my 2 boxes of *silly little robots* as the woman calls 'em.

Oh, and the pc

Oh yea, almost forgot, the bits of wood and red metal to the side are off of my daughters wild west style wagon. WHich she likes to go for rides in

HeHe, I wonder if Coops, et al, have the same level of personalisation and clutter round the back rooms of Novatech HQ that we see in this thread? I think we should be shown. :)

I remember a young programmer at Psion HQ who drew official complaints for his customised Windows alerts. You know, stupid loud noises with every mouse click and stuff. He thought it was way cool. Drove everyone else crazy.

Apparently having PCs and TVs in your bedroom is very bad for sleep patterns. But I had a feeling Chewie's was going to be shipshape. :P

I'll agree with that. I have my main rig and a server in my room and it's really too noisy to sleep. I hate having to turn them off but I have to. The server's pretty quiet but my rig just gets on my proverbials. Apart from the PSU, CPU and GPU fans, I have a 120mm in the front to blow air over the HDDs and an 80mm in the back sucking out. Individually, none of the fans are particularly noisy, but put them all together....

Plus my Razer mouse and it's **** LEDs. I'm sure I read somewhere that there's a software switch for them but cannot check as I'm away from home for a week.

Jonny2Bad

I think its more to the point its harder to get off the thing if its in your room,so making the choice to go to bed harder, i find myself tied to the thing, as i watch tv through it also, so the tv will be on in the corner and i'll be on the net just seems to be a pattern that i need to break i think lol.

So if this is the spam FFA thread, can we just put our general inane **** in it, regardless of whether it's computer related or not?

If so, I would like to take this opportunity to brag about my genius (thank you, thank you). When I moved to Canada I had all my firearms impounded and had to take their firearms safety course and hunter's education. For the firearms safety I got 100% on the written, 96% on the practical (I didn't tell the instructor I was pressing the trigger in order to make the action safe - if you know lever action rifles you'll know what I mean), and 98% on the hunter's education.
I'm so proud. In your face, bureaucrats!

Any interesting details about the Katana and Wakizashi, Nox?

blimey you can only just see the wakizashi, it's the middle part of the stand on the window (but you can only see the ends of the top two) - the tanto is out of vision at the bottom and you then have the katana on top.

So i'm assuming you're talking about Kaze and Oniyuri :) Wind and Tiger Lily, both Paul Chens and imported from China rather than Commercial Road. (Before the, now irrelevant, sword ban I hasten to add) Kaze, the one with the brown tsuka (handle) is a regular katana size, shape etc. Oniyuri, is more interesting, and it's still a 'katana' If you notice the tsuka is about two-three inches longer, which is fairly rare, but what you don't see is the blade, it's shorter than a regular katana and doesn't go all the way to the end of the saya (scabbard), making the total length of the sword near enough the same as a regular katana. From it's proportions the sword is a lot more balanced as you can get your hand closer to the centre of gravity, if you wish, it's reach doesn't need to be compromised much and it comes out of the scabbard quicker. Also you could hide things in the end of the scabbard if you wanted, but its appearance to anyone passing was that of a regular katana, near enough. In Japan it was illegal to carry a weapon such as a wakizashi unless you were samurai. It is pretty much exclusively used by practioners of Buijinkan Ninjutsu. Both are made from 9260 Carbon Steel, folded, tempered etc, and the Oniyuri has the bo-hi, making it even more balanced, lighter and faster. As a comparison I would suggest thinking about something a bit sharper than a brand new stanley knife. Enough details?

And if you decide to break into my house either bring a gun, or be prepared to run away very quickly, I will assume you're armed and dangerous :)

Aha, my dear man is educated about his weaponry! Very good, very good. Paul Chen makes some damned nice swords, and you've chosen potentially my two favourites; I'm thoroughly jealous. One day I'll share my collection, just need to tidy them up sometime (strewn about the place) including two original Zulu spears and a late 1700s cavalry sabre that I need to fix up, it's looking its age now and needs a new handle and some scabbard holes fixed when I get time!
Don't forget to oil them! High(ish) carbon steel like your .6% 9260 is going to rust like a mother if it gets even slightly damp, which is the one and only reason I don't want to use it for knife making. It's a superior steel but I think I'll just stick with the basics like 440C, O1 or D2.

Don't forget to oil them! High(ish) carbon steel like your .6% 9260 is going to rust like a mother if it gets even slightly damp

Yep, - left in direct sunlight for two days, dried the scabbard enough to evaporate some moisture onto the blade, now there is was tiny patch on one of them where I must of missed it one of the first times I oiled it, had to take it off with some very very fine grit wet & dry :( Would rather a patch that looked slightly dull than risk loosing the sword - the other (recommended) option was to leave it, but i've seen how rust works... Certainly a leaning process.

If you look on my desk, see that can of WD40? :D they are cleaned and liberally sprayed every two weeks. About the best stuff to clean them that often with, thats easily available, and cheap! Next to it is a pucker Paul Chen cleaning kit (heh) but I never use it as it wouldn't last long enough! :)

Have chucked out the old Pentium/865 combo from my old modified eMachines at last. So the idea is that all the second tier components from my stockpile go into the case for a quiet PC and moderate gamer, and free up my better stuff for a big future project. So here's a bargain £10 Celeron 430 OC to 2.4GHZ, and a EVGA 8600GT vid card and Seagate 7200.9 80GB SATA with the old quiet Nexus 350W PSU I so like.
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/5020/s7quietpcsw7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The Celeron came with a small stock Intel 3 pin cooler, but I fitted a similar small 4 pin Intel stock I had lying about, which is vying with the hard drive as the source of an irritating high frequency ringing noise even at 1200 rpm. The 10C better copper Nexus cooler here makes more windrush noise, so more investigation and swapping needed when I get some more heatsink paste. These silent PC problems are tricky! :?

This is of course, clearing the decks for something new. Like a lovely SLI board, Jonny. :) The eMachines case is very solid. But, I mean, what's a Pentium worth these days? :P

I'm going to put that quieter Intel cooler back in, then call it a day. Save the more effective Nexus cooler for the big one. It really looks mostly like a hard drive whine to me. But time will tell. :?

It's a socket 478 3GHz HT FSB800, Jonny. You're more than welcome to it at if you drop me an address to steveponsford at msn.com

But it's not a patch on the 430 according to the guys at NewEgg:

Pros: Overclocks BETTER than CPUs at 5 times the price. Runs stable at 2.7 and 3.0Ghz by simply changing FSB from 9x200 to 9x300 or 9x333.
Cons: Wish I had gotten this BEFORE I watsed my time andd resstocking fees on an E8500 which refused to OC (get this Celeron or wait for EO stepping versions of E8500)
Other Thoughts: Gigabyte EP45-DS3R,Crucial 2GB DDR2 800 6-6-6-18

About 30% slower than a dual at worst:
http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/cpu/intel-celeron-420-440-page1.html

Unfortunately my last thumbprint of heatsink paste has got it idling at 60C, so I'd better not heavily OC it yet.
