I know this may seem fairly ovious but is it possible to run a PCI-e graphics card with an old PCI mother bourd? If not what would be the best graphics card to get for the old PCI or AGP slots?
thx

PCI-E wont work on PCI
be free to try and prove me wrong, but it wont
best AGP, give us a price range first :D
and also
Is it AGP x8/x4/x2/x1

what sort of games would you be using this card on??
nvidia and ATI cards work well on different games
get this nvidia card
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... l?XFX-68XT (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?XFX-68XT)
or this ATI card
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... ?SAP-X16P5 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?SAP-X16P5)
it is all down to who you prefer really
the ATI one is slightly cheaper than the nvidia card

mainly, first person shooters like COD2

ATI work well with COD2, even though the game was developed with nvidia, the game works better on ATI
counter strike source-ATI
battlefield 2-ATI
quake 4-Nvidia
doom 3-nvidia
they are the main games
it may not get as high frame rates as with the highest pricing card, but with a decent processor and RAM these 2 cards will be able to have some eye candy without having hugh system lagg
can you provide your system specs??

The more RAM the better, what you heard was poppy ****
So you have 2X512mb RAM modules
That rig should be fine with any of these 2 cards, You could buy some more RAM, maybe a 1024mb module to replace one of those 512mb's you have

tyvm! I'll try one of those cards, once again, thanks for the advice

so have you decided which one?? :D
i would go for nvidia because i am an nvidia fan boy, but the ati card should see you well into the future, but ATI fans are louder than nvidia ones, so keep that in mind also

I think im gonna go with the ATI as it has double the memory and I never used an ATI card beforE :D

The double memory doesnt really make that much of a difference tbh
But ATI cards do work well on all games

Q: Related..
I've a Sempron 2600 Proc in a ASUS K8S-MX board... XP, plus 512Mb RAM
The board purports to support PCI-e
however at the moment I'm running off the built in graphics chip
Not a hard gamer...but would a cheap-o PCIe or AGP graphics card speed things up a bit as the box isn't doing that work?
Or is £35 better spent on more memory?

a graphics card will speed up the computer by quite a bit.
look on task manager (ctrl+alt+del) and look on performance, so if the cpu usage is high then a graphics card will be better for performance
Im pretty sure that you can get a 256mb nvidia 6200 for agp and pci-e, and that card is cheap and can play the latest games
i think it is £50 or something like that

For his money, (£35 as stated) he could get a PCI-e 7300LE, but as this board has only a PCI-e 1x slot (as well as the AGP slot), i'm not certain he'd gain much from that or if an AGP card would be better. Unfortunately, They don't have nothing above a 5500(nvidia) or 9550/9250 depending on the make (ati) in the agp cards for £35 or so.
Yea it'd be faster than the onboard plus you'd get the assistance from the pixel shading and other software/hardware facilities that the onboard can't cope with, but for general wordprocessing and the occaisianal video, Pyrie isn't going to need much.
If your doing any graphics work (gaming or otherwise) a better card would be advisable.

If you are looking for a cheap graphics card, that isnt for gaming, then get a regular pci card, it will increase the performance of your system.
get an old skl geforce mmx440 se 64mb :D

Hi Chewie.
I think you hit the nail on the head...I'm not after mega gaming cards - we do a bit of simulation stuff.. but nothing fast required (its for my son & I).. biut I just thought about taking the load off the internals and having the graphics run by a seperate card..
I don't want to spend £200 on a card for a box that cost me £150 to build!
so any ball-park recommendations received...
Many thanks

I'm guessing anything mainstream will be better than what's onboard.
What is the onboard card?

Go for a regular pci card
nothing fancy, but will do the job
here you go £40 graphics card

His system is based round a mirage2 graphics as part of the SIS 760GX chipset

If it were me, i'd go AGP as the PCI-e 1x slot is more for peripheral devices rather than vga cards (IMHO).
For a few pounds more, this would be my choice. Its a generation old, but if you can stretch to it, go for a 6600 based card. You say its for you and your son, well, the 6600 will give you the mid range (well, slightly below it) for the 6x00 series cards. It will mean your son will have something with some kick to it should he be interested in any games later on. One of these should handle simulation work with ease.
