hi. im having trouble finding a new cooler for system. i dont have that much experience with coolers and i found out that there are different sockets for coolers but i cant seem to find out which socket mine is.. the cpu i have is a 3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4. the socket itself has metal clips on both sides which is used to hold down the cooler firmly. the dimensions of my current cooler is 89mm by 64mm and the cooler fits firmly in it. i have ideas its an socket 478 or 775 but im not sure.

i was thinking that maybe i would need a different rentention module. cos im not sure if my one now is a out of date one or something as i cant find any cooler that are for P4 and fit the dimensions i have.

any help is very appreicated, and some suggestions on some products would be great too if ppl know what im talking about :P

thanks^^;

If you P4 has little pins all across the bottom of it then it is Socket 478.

The New LGA 775 P4 CPu does not have pins. They are Pinless CPU's instead they just have little metals dots.

The actually pin connections for 775 CPU are in the socket on the motherboard rather than on the CPU.

As far as i know all bog standard P4 Coolers had standard size rentention bracket. Some of the more weird and wonderful fans such as Zalman Flower Fans and things like that would have there own special bracket but must use the standard one.

I have a p4 Socket 478 Fan here which is bog standard Intel One and that measure. 89mm x 65mm by my best guess with a ruler.

What kind of measurements have you seen?

yea mine has pins on the bottom..
and yea i got the standard fan that came with it and it has the sizes that you mentioned. i brought a new fan that was for a p4 socket 478 but the connector on the fan wouldnt goto the socket and didnt fit into the socket firmly.

and i presume that you have the same fan as me.

What Fan did you buy. Do you have a make and model number?

That fan will fit standard P4 Socket 478 Retention Bracket.

yea but it didnt fit firmly into my socket and couldnt attached to the socket so i think i need a buy a different rentention bit. like i said my current one just has clips on the sides which hold down the cooler, so i think i need a different rentention bit as i cant find any coolers that go to this socket

Ok thats the standard P4 478 Retention so if thats not what you have then that explains why standard fan does not fit your board. So in order to use standard size fan you will need Standard P4 Retention. I don't think it is something we stock like a sale item as we only ever used them in our Production department. I can have a look on Monday for you and see if we still have some down there.

If you have Digital Camera, Any chance you can doa pic for us so we can see what you have??
