Q. Why does my optical mouse jump around the screen when ever i move the mouse?

A. The problem that you are having may be down to the surface that you are using the mouse on. Optical mice have problems working on shiny surfaces.

Here is a little information on how the mouse works.

The red LED on the bottom illuminates the surface, the mouse has a small sensor (similar to a camera) that can scan the surface about 1500 - 3000 times a second. This sensor then transmits information to the digital signal processor (DSP) what will scan the information for slight differences. It can pick up the slightest bit or movement. It will then send this information to the PC which will then make the cursor move on screen.

If the mouse is on a shiny surface (mouse mat or varnished desk)then it would act a bit like a mirror, reversing most of the information that the sensor picks up. This will then send incorrect information to the DSP what in turn will send the wrong information to the PC causing the cursor to move incorrectly or in some cases not at all.
