Hi,

Hope this is the right place to post this type of request...

I have the Q321 from Novatech and am using it with the Samsung HR720 DVD/HDD Recorder. I'm having trouble recording any iDTV channels on to the HDD/DVD recorder. I'm not sure how I should connect up the relevant devices....so any help would be much appreciated

Does anyone have the same or similar setup to this???

Currently I have the RF Aerial connector going into the HDD/DVD RF-In. The RF Out of the HDD/DVD recorder goes into the TV's RF-IN. I then have a scart cable going from the HDD/DVD recorder to the TV's Full-Scart connector. However all I can record is normal terristoral channels :(

The Samsung HR720 HDD/DVD recorder has the following input/outputs:

SCART Connectors Output x 1 • Input x 1 •
Inputs RF (TV) x 1 • S-Video (via SCART) •
Outputs Composite x 1, S-Video x 1, Component x 1, Analog Audio x 2, Digital Audio Coaxial x 1, Digital Audio Optical x 1, RF x 1 •
Front Panel Composite Input • Audio Input • iLINK DV Input •

I'm not sure if I should be using the half-scart connector on the TV?
What is the diff between full and half scart?
Do I need to connect 2 scart cables between the devices?

Please Help :D

Full Scart is wired for RGB and Composite/S-Video Video Signals.

Half Scart is wired for Composite/S-Video Video Signals only.

So for example if you wanted to watch your tv image using RBG format it would require a Full Scart device to provide the source image. This would be somthing like a sky or NTL cable box. A Full wired cable to carry the RGB signal in to the full scart socket on your TV.
This is one of the biggest mistakes people make with Scart. They connect there devices together on scart but only use a scart lead that is half wired. So they do not get the RGB signal which is much better than composite.

I am not to sure about recording the IDTV signal. That will not work what you have done as remember the Digital TV Tuner is in the TV so connecting the TV aerial via your HDD recorder will not record digital TV unless your HDD recorder has its own Digital Tuner and i don't think the TV is output video on its scart feed

Obviously if you had digital freeview box you would connect from that to your HDD recorder and then to your TV.
As example i have NTL at home. This is my source device. I then connect this to my HDD Recorder. My HDD recorder is getting video feed from my NTL box and thus can record the images being sent. I then have another cable that goes from my HDD recorder to my TV. This allows the TV signals from NTL to go though my HDD recorder and then on to my TV.
So in reality the HDD recorder just passes everything on to my TV from the NTL box but because its wired in between NTL and my TV it can also see the signals my TV can and thus can record them.

I am not sure if you can output the IDTV signal from the TV in to an external Device for recording.
I will need to go away and examine the output signals for the Q321 to see if this could be done.

Ok all i found so far is on Page 23 of the hyundai Manual

It would suggest that you need to connect a scart cable from the Half Scart socket to the input feed on your HDD recorder.

This would allow recording of TV but only if TV is on.

You could try that and see if that works

Hi

Thanks for your replies

Can I confirm:

The Samsung HR720 DVD/HDD Recorder has 2 scart connectors.
1 for output connection to the TV (A)
1 for input connection from external equpment (B)

Therefore I need to:
1. connect a scart cable from DVD/HDD Recorder (A) to the Full-Scart connector on Q321
2. connect a scart cable from DVD/HDD Recorder (B) to Half Scart connector on Q321

When I wish to watch and record an iDTV channel, which input should be selected on the TV? Half-Scart, Full-Scart, Video etc?

Is this correct?

Thanks for your help

Going by what the manual states as i cannot test this for you sadly, it would suggest that the connection setup you have described would be correct.

I would assume that when recording IDTV you TV would have to be turned on and switch to IDTV source. If i am reading this correctly this signal would be sent out via the Half Scart to allow recording on external device.

When you wanted to watch what your recorded you would have to switch to full scart as this is what your HDD recorder output to TV connector is plugged in to.

Thanks for your reply

Will try this out tonight (hopefully it will work *fingers crossed*)

There is a video out next the full scart lead and the audio out leads are a next to the digital out and sub out, not sure what you have on your HD recorder, if you do not have a composite in you can easily get composite to scart leads and use one of them. I've not tried this as I use a telewest TVdrive, but i see no reason for it not to work. I may be wrong but i think the scart leads are only for input as are most of the other conections. I would imagine the output leads are for the DVT and/or anologue TV although they may output whatever the dispaly is set to.

All,

This has been cheesing me off since I got the telly - don't get me wrong, I am extremely pleased with it generally but I was hoping that I could simplify my intstall by 'losing' my Pioneer digibox from the setup.

I have seen 'Coops' reply but the only signal I can get from the **** thing (Q321) via either SCART is an analog one!

Can we PLEASE, PLEASE have a definitve answer to this from Novatech - should there be a digital output we can record from or not!????

Hi,

I have not checked the users manual sorry, but based on the normal scart standard i am not aware of any digital output. As far as i am aware all inputs / outputs are analogue only, unless of course the users manual says otherwise, which i guess it will not.

If indeed the scarts on the TV are bi-directional then the TV will not pass the IDTV (Digital signal) to the hdd recorder, the TV would only ouput composite video for example.
