Ok, easy with teh CAPS lock there Tracey.

Can you confirm the exact code of the RAM you have purchased for me, as looking at the specs of the GX1, what you have purchased is incompatible with your PC.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/s ... htm#Memory (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ban_gx1/specs.htm#Memory)

According to the spec, you should have PC100 chips not PC133, and although it may take upto 768mb of ram, it does state that it can olny take sticks of 32,64,128 or 256 in any of its dimm slotts.
Suggest you arange with Novatech to getthem returned and refunded, and try 1 or 2 sticks of this instead.
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... RAM-256/10 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?RAM-256/10)

Hope that solves your problem.

it should just be plug and play, but ive seen in some cases you need to get specific memory from dell, have you trie it with just the 512 stick in??

Tax, check my info.

The board is a PC66/100 board, pentium 2 266-600mhz capable.

It wont accept 512mb sticks even if it did down clock them from 133 to 100mhz.

You'll have to excuse me for not being computer literate, but if take any of the memory sticks out that are in already is there any info on them that i have to save or can i just put say 3 x 256 instead of the 128 x2 that are in? (for my dell optilex gx1)
Thanks
Tracey

No worries tracey, you can just drop in the new sticks without a worry of loosing anything.

What i might suggest, is to remove one of the sticks, make a note of any details on the sticker(should have a sticker on it) which you should find. Put it back in the machine and then do a google search using that information.
This should help you ascertain the exact clock speed memory you are using, PC66 or PC100.

Can you tell us what your cpu speed is, as we might be able to guesstimate what the most likely speed will be for the ram.

Hi me again, i did a scnn on my computer from the "crucial " web site and that says it's cpu speed is 695MHz, Front-side bus speed 100MHz and that the sticks that are in are non-parity? Hope this info helps.
Thanks
Tracey

the problem with the memory could be a compatibility issue. the 133 memory should have clocked down to 100mhz. as the 100mhz memory is also not working i would guess the problem is down to compatibility.

dell systems can be very fussy when it comes to memory upgrades. as the generic memory we sell is not working you may need to try branded memory or maybe contact dell to see what they advise.

Dells work best with Kingston and Cruicial branded ram, had no problems with these machines at my previous work with good quality ram.

The Dell GX1 is a good but old Pentium II/III PC so its unlikely to run on 512Mb anyway.

Hmm this could be problematic for Tracey then, what with the range of pc100 sticks that are easily available being vey small, so sending her machine to Novatech to get them to try a few different ones isn't going to be of help.

And somehow getting Dell to spill what particular make was used in the GX1 is notlikely to happen either.

Shall search and see whats about.

Tracey, Sorry, but theres little we can do at this time, unless one of the moderators see it (from home).

It will be dealt with but as for me, theres not much i can do to remove this at this time.

Again many apologies.

The stuff thats in the dell machines at work is any old unbranded cra.... well, thats how it seems, some are infeon chips, some hynix, some samsung, anything. some are even the 'pico' symbol, and not a lot else.
