I'm not going to make Apocalypse Now, and I don't have a fancy PC. But... I have a few video clips from my digital camera that I just want to splice together and show on my kodak digital photoframe. Here's the problem - windows movie maker won't save the resulting movie in a format the frame will play. It needs to be AVI, MOV, or mpeg 1 or 4. As far as I can see movie maker won't do that for me. Can anyone recommend a free, simple editor that will do the trick please? Cheers.

It's been ages since I used Movie Maker, but I'm pretty sure it saves in .avi format. If that particular version of .avi isn't compatible with your picture frame, I'd be tempted to continue to use Windows Movie Maker but download and install one of those free format conversion programs that litter the 'net. I can't recommend any particular one, so there's a link to the Google search.

Here's MS' spec for MM: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308464

And the Google search for converters (wmv to mpeg-1 in this case): http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q= ... arch&meta= (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=wmv+to+mpeg-1+conversion&btnG=Google+Search&meta=)

I wouldn't download one of those free video conversion programmes that litter the internet...

I tried this a few weeks ago trying to convert videos for use on a Blackberry and I got stuck with some pain in the ar$e virus of somesort that kept resetting my firefox browser! You might be ok, just be very careful what you download..

Find a commercial piece of software that does what you want and buy it! A hard copy from a reputable company.. I will be doing just this once I build a new PC.

Just my advice!

I'd download one of those Free programmes. The capital "F" is significant...

Find a commercial piece of software that does what you want and buy it!

Or download something where you can verify the provenance. That usually means the source will be available from the same place (although you don't need to build from source if you don't want to).

Obviously, if you download any file from the internet, virus scan it first, before execution. Or you will get infected. However, it also helps if you can find other users experience with that software first. As with all free programs, they will have bugs of some sort, report them to the author and usually they will try and fix them in a future release. Don't hurt to donate a little something to the cause if you find something that works for you.
I can name a dozen free programs that i like better than "propriety" software.

VLC media player or Windows Player Classic; either will play pretty much any movie format going.

VLC - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
MPC - http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Classic/3000-2139_4-10518778.html
