I've got a matrix pro with the combo drive. Just installed some more fonts onto xp, then did the same on my wife's novatech system.

Mine took around five minutes just listing the fonts on the cd-rom. Her system took about ten seconds.

Any ideas why mine is so slow?

I've seen in the combo manual that Windows is supposed to have the necessary driver, so can't be that.

is it slow for everything? or just 'that cd' and listing it? there could be a scratch that one drive is ignoring, the other is having probs with, possibly due to age of the lasers? or partly damaged ide cable, could be lot of things.

for a directory listing, not really, only on transfer speed - a 24x drive will spin up in half the time (it only has to spin up half as fast) so any benefit gained by the miniscual data xfer would be made up from the faster seek. Generally.
