There are quite a few excellent choices in that price range:
Bargain of the bunch is this Nova-brand model. I think we once worked out which manufacturer they've rebranded, but I can't remember now. Suffice to say, it is good, although cheap plastics on the bezel and stand. £180.

Two from Dell - one is the very popular S2409W, the other is a 23" with the proper aspect ratio for widescreen. Dell stands are excellent and hugely adjustable. £225 and £200 respectively.

This LG gets excellent reviews everywhere. £225.

My fave, but slightly outside your price bracket is the one I bought with my own money. Hyundai - £285.

Hi there
Jonny2Bad is spot on the Novatech 28" is an awsome monitor or gaming on, I've seen them in action too and the price Novatech has is very good and the monitor is exceptional value. The Samsung is also very good but if gaming is your priority then the bigger screen will be more rewarding.

The first monitor that Neil recommended - http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... NOV-LCD24D (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-LCD24D) is made by Acer. I had the 19" version and the picture was amazing. Seriously great value for money and I'm sure the 24" version would be equally as good.

Is that based on the picture in the shot? if so it's the exact 24" wide version of a pair of 17" 's I use at work. can even almost make out the AL2423W in the top right corner and the 'acer' under the car of the large image.
however, the image is no guarantee of what is being sold. I'm interested in this screen, but would like to know if it is Acer or something else..

cheers for replies guys. i think i have decided on the novatech 24" it's more in my price range at £179. but you know what? i'm extremly tempted by the novatech 28"! that looks like an awesome monitor and what the **** is another £100 anyway! would 28" be overkill though? does anyone really need that size of screen? i'm a really heavy gamer, like to play all my games on max. would it be worth it?

oh yes it would be worth it lol for sure, if your a heavy gamer then heads are just that much bigger that means more BOOM HEADSHOT !!!!!

having never before gone higher than 12x10 screen dispaly in 10 years of pc gaming this will be a massive improvement for me! how much of a performance hit do higher resolutions have on fps? at the moment i'm running GTAIV on high settings with an average of 41 fps, would cranking up the res on a 24" or 28" monitor be damaging to performance? don't really want to pay £200-£300 only to still play it at 12x10.

do you mean 1280x1024 res? All screens above 22 inch tend to have a resolution of 1680x1050 and above, but your card should be able to play @ 1680x1050 anyways :) where are you based by the way? edit: read the profile you numpty :P, how easy would it be for you to get to portsmouth? as if you could you could pop into the novatech store there and have a look, they ahve the 28 incher out on display :) it will also let you have a look @ the screens b4 u buy and you could pick them up that day :) no shipping cost either :P, although if you do intend to do this, call them a day or two before to make sure they have them @ the particular store, they can ship them store to store on a daily basis though :)

It runs at the same resolution as the 24" so wont make any difference to your performance than the 24" monitor lol

I'm in the same boat... upgrading from a Viewsonic VX922 < cost more than the 28" LCD Screen shown in this thread back in its 'day' :o
I've got a Sapphire HD4870 512mb, will it handle that res nicely?

I would vote for this monitor:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?SAM-T240
because it looks good and I love Samsung as a brand and its great for gaming as it has HDMI input as well as 1920x1200 resolution which is perfect for high end gaming

Hmm... Time for me to measure up...
What distance do you with 28" screens have it away from you?
My current 19" sits approx 2-3 feet from my face, and I feel a 28" at that distance will be OMGHUGE!MYEYESAREMELTING!
Maybe a 24" would be better.

It's one of those things you get used to, rather like plonking a 50" TV in your room for the first time.
The jump from 19" to 24" is huge (I can assure you it will put a huge grin on your face !), but those 28 inchers are mahoosive. Worth remembering that the budget 28" ones have the same native res. as the 24" screens, so will look a little more blocky than their smaller cousins.
At the end of the day it's personal preference but I think I would pick a quality 24" over a budget 28".

gone from 19 CRT to 22inch, it seemed huge, and then 24inch seems even bigger.
if you sit 2 to 3 feet away, then 24inch is better, as i sit around 3 feet away from my dual monitors.
you can see the size comparison in the picture i posted earlier, that's a 17inch Dell vs Samsung 24inch

hi been away from forums for a couple of weeks, i decided to get the novatech 24" monitor, prompt delivery. it is acer branded, looked at pics on novatech site and the acer and novatech monitors are exactly the same shape. been pretty pleased with it, just playing at bigger resolutions.
but one problem is that when games show really dark colours they are darker than they should be (i think) compared to lighter to medium colours. this is an annoying problem in games like FEAR 2 and a couple of levels in brothers in arms.
is there any settings i can change that could help me?
dont seem to be getting anywhere in acer colour management. would the colour settings in the nvidia control panel be of any use?

Should be able to change that on the monitor itself... buttons underneath...?
