Hello everyone...

A while ago I bought a Western Digital 1TB MyBook World Edition, which is basically a hard drive that can be used via USB or an RJ45. There are a lot of people out there who have managed to get their MyBook to act as a file server on their home network so that they can access it remotely (from work etc). The main place for the 'hacking guide' is here: http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/hacks-and-howto

Now, I have managed to get so far... I have enabled SSH but now I need to install Optware, which I don't know how to do. I find the instructions a little hard to follow...

Any of you had joy with this?? I've done a search for MyBook on the forum, but no avail!

the instructions for optware ( http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/optware ) just looks like one by one *nix command lines.

when it says execute the commands one by one, just type each line on the howto into your SSH prompt exactly as is followed by return. (have you logged in via SSH yet?)

where is says add <something> to a file, you need to edit the stated file and pop the line in somewhere (doesn't usually matter where) you'll probably have to get the file off the device, edit it and upload the edited copy back on.

the whole process is not too trivial if you have no *nix command line experience

Your may find more general help at nas-central.org .... Optware rocks... very easy to install and remove packages... user friendly (if anything that needs command line can be called that!)

Yes NSLU2 comes with 133 or 266mhz CPU depending on whether you have a newer or older one. Easy overclock (or de-underclock as they call it) at nslu2-linux.org if memory serves...

I love those NAS boxes when they do more than just store files!
