Maxtor USB2 External drives

My IBM USB 2 HDD powers down if I disconnect the power /remove my laptop

The External housing and a 3.5" IDE drive don't... -

So..which policy do these Maxtor drives follow - power down or continue?

probably power saving options in control panel need to be tweaked, some laptops stop power to the USB ports to save battery power.
