HI there

At the moment I got an ATI Radeon in there but I keep getting from time the graphics driver has failed in Vista which is a common problem and as such I may go back to my trusty NVIDIA card, I dont game so much any more apart from the odd bit of C&C and mainly use the PC for Blu-Ray playback so its not a huge loss if I go back to my NV card.

I have a very open mind about the strength or weakness of different graphics. But no doubt, some people are just plain good at setting up a stable system. :)

There's so much going on in a modern PC that it's amazing some of this new tech is even marginally stable. And no-one person understands every aspect of a PC, either hardware or software, so it's an endless learning curve as you try to figure out what the gaming issue might be.

All these newer power saving modes on CPUs and graphics, and even RAID array usage, are continually putting blips on the power rails as they kick in or out. Firewalls and Anti-virus and more recently, OS security self-monitoring, are interfering with running and driver installs. Lot of these cards run hot too, and recent lead-free solder regs have reduced chip reliability. "Keep it simple" still seems the best plan to me.

Always been a big fan of Ati, but when Nvidia released the 8800GTX it just blew away Ati in terms of performance it was like the holy grail.

Since then I've switched to the GTX 280 & have been very happy.

I can honestly say I don't mind using either Ati or Nvidia both companys are alot better in terms of driver compatability than they used to be.

At the end of the day you will always get one problem or another whatever card/manufacturer you use.

WTH!
Everyone seriously underestimates this card, it's not far off a 9600GT in performance and needs hardly any power.
Thrashes my old 8600GT, produces something like twice the framerate in games usually. Can even play Crysis on high!

Been using Nvidia since the Geforce 2 MX ..had 3DFX Voodoo cards before that though ..aahhh great cards at the time.

My current card is a Gainward GTX260. Brilliant card. Im not gonna say it runs Crysis at max with everything on like the world and his wife seems to do because it doesnt and for the money I probably could have got a 1Gb 4870 which is a bit pokier but I like Nvidia cards so horses for courses and all that. At 1680x1050 with 90% of graphical options on High and 2xAA and 2xAF with this card gave me a good solid, playable FPS and only hit the low 20's when It got hectic on screen.

...I miss Left4Dead!

Ok, read and weep!

In my only PC (though I do have a work laptop) I'm running an MSI FX5200 TD.

It plays all the games in glorious resolution. I get no flicker or blur at all when playing Spider Solitaire and Pinball feels as if you are IN the arcade.

Anyone out there beat that?

I couldn`t give a monkeys chuff who manufactures my weapon of choice. I bought my card for £180 when the GTX260s were still £230, no brainer ;)

I don`t and never have suffered any driver related issues you read about ... though I think your more likely to read about them from Nvidia fanboys on a blue forum ;)

Next purchase will be done using the same method I always use, see where I`m failing with the current games I`m playing performance wise, look at both Ati and Nvidias (maybe Larabee too) offerings and choose the cheapest solution :) I NEVER take it as gospel what users recommend, you never once hear "I bought this and it`s rubbish".

Ive had a few cards from Nvidia : NvG-f 6200gt, ASUS G-f 8500gt, Nv G-f 8600gt o/c edition, Palit G-f 8800 gts, i had driver problems and display problems and the 86oo o/c edition retired itself and i sent it back and swapped it for ATI card...

The ATI cards i had were HIS Ice Q Rdn x1950 pro, Saffire Rdn HD 4870 1GB, i had no problems at all with the x1950 pro and its still going strong in another machine, i havent had the 4870 long enough to comment.

I agree with the Geordie in that make doesnt matter so long as you get a good price and your card gives you trouble free gaming, although i must admit i am of the impression that ATI are more stable.

RE: Powercolor HD4870 1GB

nothing to worry about really, temps will depend on the airflow through your case, but what's good about this card is that it has an excellent fan allowing you to fine tune temps to whatever you like. Boosting the fan speed by 25% dropped my temps by approx 16ºC, and the fan remains silent at that speed. I'm very happy with the card, when gaming I mostly put everything on full settings, then just jump into the game, on a 1680 x 1050 resolution monitor games look superb! Also the price on the Powercolor 1GB HD4870 has dropped by 40 quid since I bought mine.

... With my CPU overclocked to 4GHZ, these are my HD4870 temps as shown in Everest, the card is running at stock settings of 900x750 MHZ

top screen: Idle temps are 76ºC, manual fan speed is off. (idle temps are too high for my liking)

middle screen: Idle temps 61ºC, manual fan speed is on increased by 25%. (this is much better)

bottom screen: Gaming temps 68ºC after playing COD5 for about 20 mins, manual fan speed is on increased by 30%. (I use this setting for gaming)

And if there are two similar price and performence cards next time I go to buy, I shall be going green next time... I've been unlucky enough to be one of those people who finds ATI drivers horrible regarding compatability and performence.

PNY 8800GTS 512Mb here (thanks Novatech) - replaced an 8800GTS 320mb, which replaced a 7800GS, a GT6600, GF4200Ti, GX200, Voodoo 3000; well, you get the picture.

Trouble is 1Gb VRAM is calling, which prob means some serious upgrading.

then there are me long term loan putes.

ATi 9800AIW on the bro in laws, more intel extrme on the sister in laws pute, Kyro 2 on the bro in laws daughters, yet more intel extrme trite on the bro in laws daughter No 2`s pute.

all of the above maintained by yours truly.

I'm currently on ATI. Always had more of a softspot for them as they have been more of an underdog and produced some nice cards that have been able to be flashed to better models and overclocked a lot. (Not that nvidia can't). Also in my experience overall over the last 7 years or so, I have found them to run cooler on an average scale. (i will again stress on average throughout many different cards I have owned from both).
I have had issues with modern ATI cards outputing to a HD tv though so would never go with them again unless they fix this.

my 4870 outputted to a HDTV in 1080i perfectly fine, on windows 7 too.

Question was main PC so I voted ATI. Got a 4870 and 4850 Crossfire going on in there.

My LAN box runs Nvidia and my HTPC runs Nvidia too. One's a 7900GS and the others onboard 6150, having said that the LAN box with the 7900GS has onboard ATI X1250 just to mix it up a bit.

My laptop runs Intel rubbish though :(

Oh, and I almost forgot the X1950pro that's sat on my shelf - wanted to sell it on 'common auction site' until I saw the pitiful price that an X1950pro will bring.

well that's not true, and never has been... (well not yet anyway... what happens in the next month is another story)
so currently, a 9600 GT ("novatech" gainward 1GB - was actually cheaper than the 512Mb at the time) to see me through till the 2 factions start competing again...

they used to make cards that were popular before nVidia and ATI were the major players, now they make cards for specific non-gaming multi-monitor applications. they are usually very expensive, but solidly reliable. i think the one guy did have one - he posted a pic even

GS < GSO < GT < GTS < GTX < GX2 for 9 series and below. GT < GTS < GTX for 200 onwards.

I think... :D

Its a 5770 by Powercolour in my main pc these days, had a lot of bother with nVidia drivers recently so the 9800 GT has been ditched.

Other pcs in the house hold have the following...

Laptop 1 - ATi 3470
Laptop 2 - ATi x1200
Laptop 3 - Trident
Desktop 1 - nVidia 6800GT]
Desktop 2 - nVidia 5900 ultra
Desktop 3 - nVidia MX440 low profile
Tower 2 - Xabre 200
Tower 3 - nVidia 4200

lots of graphics cards spares in this house, far too many to mention! generally I lean towards ATi / AMD rather than nVidia.

I'm still running 512 9800GT.

I wanted to get a new card but iirc the 460 is the lowest upgrade that I might notice a difference and I'm not prepared to spend £130 on a card right now, the 9800 was sub £100 when I bought it and until something that can tan it's backside comes along for sub £100 it will be staying, runs all modern games on high level still and some forum post's suggest it's not worth upgrading as the card isn't far behind the new generation ones anyway.

If your not worried about staying team green a HD 5770 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/components/atiradeongraphicscards/atihd5700series/Novatech/57701GB.html) would be a decent sub £100 upgrade.

A GTX 260 if a decent upgrade from your current card, most reviews show the 5770 a bit faster.

TBH, I was watching some tubes of BF2BC last night, most had 500+ cards and some i7 i5 processor's and I couldn't see much more of an improvement other than some smoother dispersing smoke, actual movement looked no faster than mine, so it's prudent not to buy another card right now.

I got my dad a 9500GT a while back and even that had Flashpoint running fine at good levels, I don't think the leaps are quite as large to the eyes as they are to the benchmarks tbh.
