Hi guys, I could do with a bit of help. I splashed out on a new graphics card and PSU, so removed pretty much everything from my PC and re-assembled it with the new parts. I switched it on and wouldn't get past the POST, 1 long beep followed by a short beep. Also my nforce 680i SLI motherboard has an LED screen that shows the status of the PC, it came up with the code 7F. I looked in the manual and states that this means 'check POST error and display them and ask for user intervention'. Any ideas what could be the problem? Any help would be appreciated guys, thanks.
System specs:
E8400
nforce 680i SLI motherboard
4gb OCZ 8500 ram
GTX 260-216
Toughpower 750W
Asus xonar DX
320gb WD hard drive
LG Blu Ray HD-DVD drive

Dug this up for you: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1223
I allways panic when it won't/ progress beyond post and beeps at me for some unknown reason, though best to approach in a logical fasion.
Beep code appears to be motherboard related but ofcourse it might not be so I would eliminate other causes first.
1. Check everything is plughed in propaly and try again.
2. Unplug every thing apart from the motherboard 1 hard drive, one optical drive and 1 stick of RAM, if that works then plug everything else back in 1 at a time rebooting the machine inbetween to identify if any spicific part has faild.
3. if that doesn't work before you start pulging the extra bits in try a diffrent hard drive and opical drive as well as diffrent RAM to see if one of those parts has faild.
4. If all else fails then you may have accidently damaged the motherboard all ways make sure you have earthed your self before delving into a computer case.
Ofcourse I may have missed something, if so someone else I'm sure will post.

input your old gpu and boot to windows or try clean installing on a new hdd the error your getting is because teh old graphics driver is causing a conflict :D
you need to go into control panel and manually uninstall teh display driver after that shut down install your new gpu then reboot you should pass post and boot to windows successfully if its a new motherboard with different chipset you will need to clean install your operating system :D

Thanks for the replies :)
I'll double check everything again. Hampshire_hog when you say unplug everything apart from the mobo, hard drive, optical drive and 1 stick of ram, will I leave the CPU out?
UKGouki, I'll try that. I moved from a 4850 to a gtx 260. Thought I'd removed all the ATi drivers and CCC before I changed the cards over, but might not have done. It's the same mobo I had before, only a new graphics card and PSU. Might end up being a new motherboard though :p

It's an EVGA nforce 680i SLI motherboard - 122-CK-NF68.

Best 680i board made, so thank goodness or a new mobo was on the cards for sure lol. An update of the bios may be in need here to add support for the newer gpu. ;)

Yeah, I've heard alot of horror stories about some 680i boards, my brothers included :p But I've got on fine with mine, well until now at least lol
Thanks Jonny, how would I go about updating the bios?

Go to the evga website and search for downloads on your motherboard and find the latest bios for it, have a little flick through the pages to see if any of the bios add compatibilty for newer hardware, this is a bit of a guide to know if this could fix it. Download and save file to c drive or flach drive. then there should be a option to flash bios in the bios, try to avoid using software to do it as this has high failure rates and makes a pretty good doorstop out of your mobo ;)

defently driver related have you got driver sweeper? if you can after you boot to safe mode with your old gpu installed remove the driver via control panel uninstall then run driver sweeper after it will remove all traces of teh ati drivers including from the registry its a knightmare tbh and some worse cases its turned into a complete clean install lol
as for the bios update you should be able to download the bios file to a thumbstick and update that way check your motherboard manuel and instructions via evga's site for flashing :D

Good point try the BIOS update first.
And no leave the CPU where it is - CPU's are very delicate.

Thanks guys, first thing when I get home, re-install the 4850, then look for a BIOS update for the mobo. Hopefully that's the one, not planning on getting a new motherboard until i7 was a bit more affordable :p

i would still double check that you have uninstalled the ati display driver's ;) and try that before updating the bios i had the same beep before and it was old nvidia driver conflicting with my new nvidia card i.e 9800 wasnt supported on the current driver i had installed :D

Well I've tried all of the above. I put the 4850 back in the PC and it worked perfect, so thought that's great I now know the problem, the GTX 260. So I installed driver sweeper, followed the instructions on that, got rid of any ATi drivers lurking about my computer. So I shut down, re-install the GTX, same problem again, same bleeps and same code on the LED. Okay, so I decide to do a complete re-install of windows, make sure any trace of ATi is off the computer. In goes the 4850 again, install windows, all good so far. Again put the GTX back in, same problem :p So last but not least, searching for the latest bios for my motherboard, the only one I can find is the NF68-P33, which is the one I flashed a while back so that my E8400 would work with it. So as far as I can see, my motherboard has the latest bios and there are no Ati drivers left on my PC. What's my next step guys? lol

I didn't find much solid help here for what I assume is an Award bios apart from pressing F1 key to continue POST at one point:
http://www.bioscentral.com/postcodes/awardbios.htm
Since the problem is that it is getting stuck at Bios level, I doubt if playing with drivers is helping.
One stick of memory in slot 3, an otherwise minimal boot and a CMOS reset taking out the battery for two minutes or moving cmosclr jumper with power unplugged seems the only hope here. Could be a power issue I suppose, and using different dedicated (6 or 8 pin?) PCIE connectors may help.

I've spoken to technical services at Novatech, explained the situation and they've agreed to send it back for testing. Hopefully it'll get resolved. Thanks for all the help, I'll keep you guys updated with how I get on.
