Formatting without partitioning: Windows XP

Hi,

I've just bought a samsung HDD 500gb from you happy chappys here and was wonder (as the title says) if I can partition the drive without formatting it.

I've spent the best part of a week trying to install XP and I've finally managed it, now all I need is to get 50gb or so seperated to use for photos/itunes
