Hi,
I have a (probably ancient now) X20, I bought nearly 2 years ago.
It runs very hot (apparently normal).
Which means the fan is on almost constantly.
The problem is the fan is REALLY noisy in a high pitched way.
I would like to replace the fan with a quieter one.
Is this a generic part? In which case does anyone know a supplier who might have one?
Or is this something I will have to get specifically from Novatech, in whoch case can someone point me in the right direction.
Many thanks.

Laptop fans are not particularly standardised but finding a spare shouldn't be a problem. They are shrouded with a duct outlet which is then hooked up to whatever particular ducting method the laptop has.
But before you start buying new parts, give the thing a good clean out. Chances are, after 2 years, it will be full of dust clogging the fan, ducts, filters etc. Removing all of that will lower the temperature of the laptop quite dramatically and should stop the fan coming on so often and at such a high speed.
The snag with laptop fans is that they are, obviously, small. Whichever replacement part you buy will be no quieter than the original if you want to keep the same cooling power. It is possible the bearings have gone in yours which means a replacement will be less 'squeaky', but nothing is going to turn your machine into a silent one.
If you do want one, just phone Nova's tech. support with your laptop serial number and they'll be able to sort you out.

Thank you.
I've had the back off and taken down the manufacturer etc details

A couple of questions:
- The black plastic fan bit is attached to a load of copper (looks like a pipe from the CPU). So can I just replace/clean the fan bit?
- What do I clean it with? A can of compressed air? Or am I likely to cause a whole load of damage that way?

Yup... you should see a fan in it's own shroud which will receive heat from the copper heat-pipes. It will either then vent the air downwards through the bottom of the laptop or route it out to the side/back via another duct.
Hopefully that fan is just attached with 2 or 3 screws to the chassis so is easily replaceable.
As for clearing the dust out, a couple of cans of compressed air shoved into any ******* you can find on the beastie will do a half-decent job of clearing it out. If you have the confidence and time... strip it down to component parts, clean and rebuild.
Bear in mind it's not just dust in the fan and shroud/duct that's causing the problem.. it's dust everywhere in there causing air to circulate less efficiently and heat to build up. If you're feeling brave, pop into your local garage and ask them to give it a quick blast with some compressed air. You will be amazed at what falls out !
This place should have what you're after (or be able to get it - couldn't see that fan in stock but there should be equivalent replacements), but try a good clean out first. Might save you a bit of cash !
