Not usually. They are generally trojans. Running unknown software with high levels of privilege is a really good way to find someone else running code on your box...

http:///www.gnu.org/ is always a good place to start.

Hi Louie,

Remove one of the '/'s from the address. Thusly :D

http://www.gnu.org/

Your error is probably a game or software not finding a particular .dll. Unfortunately, the distributions of DX9 are almost always never complete but most games etc. will add the missing files they need to run. Looks like this hasn't happened.

Having downloaded something that can only be described as ... of dubious origin... I would bite the bullet and go for a complete re-install of Windows. A virus or trojan scanner may pick up problems with your machine, it may not. I wouldn't take the chance.

However, if you want to have a look, there's an excellent free online virus scanner here:

Ive got a uniblue registry scanner that i run every so often, and it generally flags registry errors alot. Had no problem with the software fixing it tho.

I always do a full redistributable install of dirextx from the MS site after a windows install, though i'm still using aug 2008 - the nov one either didn't contain all the files I needed, or I (twice) downloaded the wrong one...

You don't have 600 problems in your registry. The program is a con, trying to frighten you into buying it.

What you may have now (due to downloading it) is a nice little trojan or virus, which will happily pinch your passwords, banking details or start using your PC as a spam emailer. Just some examples...

Re-install. Safest option. You may have to re-activate Windows when you re-install it, depending on which version you have, but this is not difficult and can be done online.
