It depends what you want mate.
Almost ANY LCD TV on the market now exceeds an old CRT monolith!
If you want to just watch telly, then you won't go wrong with any Brand.
If you want to watch sports, then go for 100hz panels.
I also recommend at least 10000:1 Contrast Ratio
If you you want to watch Blu-Ray and/or Hi-Def channels, then your selection becomes more critical and delicate.
You must decide on what you want for the following
Picture Size - Do you NEED to go high?? 42" is usually more than enough for most..
Picture Quality - Consider Contrast Ratio, Refresh rate (hertz), Lighting technology - ie LED etc
Sound Quality - Consider what you find acceptable before you buy... Audio can be as important as visual!
Input/Output options - Again - something to consider if you're building a home cinema/media centre - or might want one in the future.
Ok alot of this gets opinionated...but..
Many say...Panasonic generally produce the best quality picture.
I've heard Sony to be better with sound.
Samsung are very, very good.
LG also have some great panels.
Do your research and take your time... You've got a lot to decide.
Here's some reviews to get your brain going...

The 46" 1080p 6 series Samsung is a fantastic TV. I know two people with the same one and its utterly fantastic.

Agreed the Samsung 1080P panels are out of this world, I have a 50" Plasma and my mate has the 46" LCD and they both rock - would tell anyone looking for a TV to check them out before anything else.
