Sadly I found this out reactively rather than proactively.

However, I now have an unusable drive. Ran the Maxtor diagnostics last night which reported a Diag code error of dda2a973 and told me the drive was failing and to back up the data immediately (no chance, can't even access it through the OS!)

So, question is, I bought it through Novatech in January this year, who do I return it to to get a replacement (and preferably not a Maxtor drive given the issue with NForce 4 boards)

Thanks for any help

Mike

<Admin - could you move to the HD forum please - soz for putting it in the wrong one!>

Finally got an answer out of Maxtor and they provided me with a firmware upgrade for the disk. The freeware links they send for data recovery are not that good, tried all of them but none recognised the Maxtor drive as it wasn't being recognised by the OS as being formatted. In the end plumped for File Scavenger 3.0 which managed to get a majority of the data of the duff drive.

So, upgraded firmware and then low-level formatted disk. Seems to have worked. For now I'm making sure I don't put any 'special' data on that drive until I'm comfortable that it's fixed. Ran the Maxtor Full scan on the disk and it came back as clean so fingers crossed now...
