Hello all,

A mate of mine has recently installed a wireless network at home using a BT Hub. He has 3 PC's; a laptop and two desktops (upstairs). The Hub is upstairs too.

When one of the desktops connects to Limewire, it causes the other desktop to drop the wireless connection. The desktop with the bad connection is located in a room that has always had connectivity issues on his old router, but since he upgraded to a BT hub, the problem only occurs when the other PC is using Limewire.

Do any of you have any advice?

Thanks,
AM.

i have had same problems as you (but with bit torrent).
soem routers have a feature where if the is a pc downloading torrents or watching youtube ect it will give it more bandwidth so over pcs loose speed also it just could be that limewire is using all your bandwidth.
ps: does the over laptop still regain a good connection whilst another is connected to limewire???

Hi Doug,

Thanks for your reply.

I'll have to ask him about the laptop and get back to you. I think the laptop is only used for surfing the net, whereas the other desktop is used for online gaming, youtube, etc. I'll get back to you ASAP.

Cheers,
AM.

OK, sorry this has taken so long.

The laptop is rarely used, but there's been no noticeable loss of the network. It's only used for browsing and there have been no problems there.

Cheers,
AM.

it may be down to the router not being able to cope with UPNP, where applications/systems can request that the router opens a firewall port for direct connections. When apps request too many, put simply, the processor in the router struggles to cope with the processing required to forward the packets to the correct machine. Different routers respond in different ways when this happens, my old Belkin would reset, my netgear would do the same. I've never ran a BT router for longer than half a day, so can't help for sure - but it could be this.

Login to the BT router and turn OFF UPNP and see if there is any difference, you will get a slightly slower connection with Limewire due to traversing the NAT, but the connection may hold up better.

I have the same problem at home, when people are using file sharing on my network, just get the person using the file sharing program to set the maximum upload rate in the program whether it be torrents or limewire to a smaller amount.. say 3k - 4k and see if it still happens... fixes it for me... luckily for me its my wireless network they borrow/steal so if they dont listen i just unscrew the aerial ;)

All file sharing apps seriously hog bandwidth, best that people on the network leave their downloading overnight i find.

Agreed, ive found the same thing, bittorrent seems to slow the internet down regardless of what its downloading and how fast, so i just turn it off. Granted out router is getting on 3 years old now, so could probably do with a replace anyway.

TCPIP.SYS patch....M$ have limited the number of half open connection allowed and this causes problems with P2P software the result of which is either problems with unconnectable torrents or causes browsing to grind to a halt. Goole it and there are a few patches out there which work with XP and Vista.

check your system event logs for a 4226 error, if it is there then as Peeej said, this is aTCPIP.SYS error

On Our network at home , if Someone uses file sharing such as bit torrent it grabs all the bandwidth it can. Best to schedule The torrent client to work when you are all in bed, Also gets past Virgin media, throttling between 4 and 9

it would not suprise me if the home hub was set to do that.
