View Full Version : March Competition - Name Our New PC and Win One or £250

Welcome one and all to the March competition . . . . . .

This month there is a chance to win an awesome Novatech Dual Core Intel Atom PC. Our current range of Atom based PCs are called Ion - which is a (if I am correct) a positively charged atom. So for our new Dual Core Atom PC we need an equally cool and apt name for it. The best name offered up will be used on our new system and the winner will be awarded one of our new systems or £250 to spend at Novatech.

Full pics and specs will be on here later today.

So names please . . . .

how about the "Hadron Collider" ;)because it's so powerful it creates a black hole every time you turn it on.
now that would be great for gaming, every time you got killed or crashed in a game you could jump in the black hole go back in time and tell you self, " mind that grenade, watch that corner" oh the possibility's :)

Electron (negatively charged particle), Proton (positively), Neutron (neutral) - all obvious ones really but not great IMHO

On an Atomic theme... Quark - a sub-atomic particle... if you want to get really funky how about the infamous Higgs Boson? Naaah!

I'll claim all those as my entries but save the best to last....

Two Atoms generally make a Molecule.... so how about that? (Oxygen O2, Nitrogen N2 etc)

Rushes to old school books to look for more ideas

Not quite :-)

An ion is a number of atoms (1 or more) bound together, and carrying a charge (positive or negative).

Not that that's important right now...

So for our new Dual Core Atom PC we need an equally cool and apt name for it.

Well the obvious name would be "Diatomic", but that's an adjective.

Electron (negatively charged particle), Proton (positively)

Acorn have already marketed machines by those names. :-(

seriously :)
this is my entry:
The Gallium
First proposed to exist by Dmitri Mendeleyev in 1871 based on gaps in his newly created Periodic Table of Elements, gallium was discovered spectroscopically by the French chemist Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1875. Later that same year, Lecoq was able to obtain pure gallium through the electrolysis of a solution of gallium hydroxide (Ga(OH)3) in potassium hydroxide (KOH). Trace amounts of gallium are found in diaspore, sphalerite, germanite and bauxite as well as in the byproducts of burning coal.
Gallium melts near room temperature and has one of the largest liquid ranges of any metal, so it has found use in high temperature thermometers. Gallium easily forms alloys with most metals and has been used to create low melting alloys. Gallium is used as a doping material for semiconductors and has been used to produce solid-state items like transistors and light emitting diodes. Gallium arsenide (GaAs) can produce laser light directly from electricity. Large amounts of gallium trichloride (GaCl3) have been gathered to build the Gallium Neutrino Observatory (http://www.lngs.infn.it/site/exppro/gno/Gno_home.htm), an observatory located in Italy built to study particles called neutrinos which are produced inside the sun during the process of nuclear fusion.

My understanding was . . . .

An ion is a charged atom or molecule. It is charged because the number of electrons do not equal the number of protons in the atom or molecule. An atom can acquire a positive charge or a negative charge depending on whether the number of electrons in an atom is greater or less then the number of protons in the atom.
When an atom is attracted to another atom because it has an unequal number of electrons and protons, the atom is called an ION. If the atom has more electrons than protons, it is a negative ion, or ANION. If it has more protons than electrons,it is a positive ion.

This was after a few searches on the web.

Yep. That's what I said...

If the atom has more electrons than protons, it is a negative ion, or ANION. If it has more protons than electrons,it is a positive ion.

The word you're looking for is "cation". And both anions and cations are types of ion. Which is what I said.

Iones is supposedly the plural for ion so in theory it would mean that it has 2. So seeing as it is a dual core i think iones would be suitable :p

Or something like Gallia or Caesius which are the historic names for certain cations

EDIT: Also how long is the competition running?

I haven't read every reply so far, so I hope none of these are repeats.

But my suggestions would be 'Tritium', 'Uranium' 'Plutonium' and 'Caesium'. They're all elements in the period table, which are probably kinda boring really:P But they go along with the chemistry / physics theme though!

Edit: 'Helios' sounds pretty cool too I think, it's the greek for 'sun', and is where the name for the element 'Helium' comes from, as it was first discovered using the spectrum of light obtained from the sun.

ISO

Short for Isotopes which have something to do with Atomic mass and ions somewhere, Sounds a bit like Ion short and snappy.

When do I get my prize kpkpkp

The mention of carbon-12, a substance found in all living things, brings up the subject of isotopes. The "12" in carbon-12 refers to its mass number, or the sum of protons and neutrons. Two atoms may be of the same element, and thus have the same number of protons, yet differ in their number of neutrons—which means a difference both in mass number and atomic mass. Such differing atoms of the same element are called isotopes. Isotopes are often designated by symbols showing mass number to the upper left of the chemical symbol or element symbol—for instance, 12C for carbon-12

Relevant to the dual-core/atom as it is never found alone.
Relevant as a quark is a fundamental building block that makes up protons & neutrons (this is an entry level PC providing the fundamental basics required for a home machine, right?) - which also links it to the Ion (an Ion being a positively/negatively charged molecule that has lost/gained protons/electrons)

it cannot be Ion, as nVidia is already preparing an Ion (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=nVidia+Ion&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a) platform, so it will present naming issues later on.

It cannot be Ion, because that is what Novatech's current Atom-based system that this will either replace or compliment is called! ;)

Im gonna go with:

Fission

In nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry, nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into two parts.

Might go well with the duel core aspect perhaps?

Edit: Perhaps Fusion too, thought of that as its the opposite and more catchy but having said that there are loads of fusioin things out there, including gillette razors, who wants to be associated with them?

Edit: 'Helios' sounds pretty cool too I think, it's the greek for 'sun', and is where the name for the element 'Helium' comes from, as it was first discovered using the spectrum of light obtained from the sun.

Yeah my name is pretty cool...or should I say hawt!! Anyways, my first thought was plasma but that's taken...will have to think of a better one.

How about The Fission or The Fusion

Since (Nuclear) Fission is the process of an neutron hitting an atom and splitting it then Fission is probably the better name for a Dual(Core Intel)atom processor system then again you could argue that Fusion is a better name as you are combining two atoms to make one then using a Dual(Core Intel)atom processor to make a whole system works as well.

Any way time for an appropriate joke

Two atoms are walking down the street.
One of them says, “Wait, I think I lost an electron.”
The other says, “Are you sure?”
The first one says, “Yeah, I’m positive.”

Or if there are any old bikers out there - how about "Bonneville", aka the speed twin, a classic British twin cylinder motorbike from Triumph named after the salt flats in the USA. You could further theme the range with the Norton "Dominator".
