Hi, can anyone suggest a half decent pc headset for around £40 or so, had one of these audio fx pro 5.1 (http://www.edimensional.com/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=122) surround headsets for a while and like every other headset its broke. Liked the 5.1 surround sound on them but wouldn't buy another pair of these headphones again.

Anything similar around £40 that could be suggested would be great.

Matt.

Well you may want to look into this headset : http://www.steelseries.com/int/products/audio/siberia-full/information , its what i use and its great for £55, also it has a seperate mic that can be used as a desktop mic or a clip on mic, there is also a cable extender with volume adjuster for when your on your pc and then if you want to listen to music on your portable device you can detach the extra wire and have a shorter wire. Just have a check and see what you think. =]

$130 though which will equate to £120 cos this is UK!!!

Although the G35's look good they are a little out of my price range. An online pc store have a pre order price of £83.98, thats double what I want to spend so unless Novatech plan to sell them much cheaper I wont be getting any. :(

Yeh lol we always get ripped off by the currency conversion even when it was $2:£1.

Thats why I always cried when Steve Jobs announced the new latest-and-greatest because it sounded alright until you factored in the EU effect.

The Creative Fatal1ty headset is actually very good (despite the fatal1ty name), and can be had for about 30 notes from Amazon

Would that be the same one as Novatech sell for 28 notes, Order Code: CRE-51MZ03
Think I may get this headset if they have stock of it on Friday.

Also check on HUKD and see if there are any deals on for headsets atm.

For 5.1 headsets, I personally would recommend some Medusa's, but the proper ones are over £40. Have a look at the Zalman 5.1's:

so much wasted money in this thread :(

Decent pair of headphones + desk mic is the way to go here, "gaming" headphones have a 1 word explanation: awful!

Understandably if you lan though then your going to need headsets but personally i would probably still put a decent pair of headphones for home and some cheap cheerfulls for lan

I've used a huge range of different gaming headphones and nothing has ever lived up to the level of a proper pair of cans

I have a set of SpeedLink Medusa 5.1 gaming headphones, complete with mic and I find them absolutely fantastic. I've never had an issue with them, they're the ones that plug in via the amp, not USB, and I've been using them everytime I use the computer (which is practically every day) for the past 3 years and they still work perfectly. Even bought a pair for my other half as she needed a decent set of headphones. She loves them too. They can be had for about £45, and are definitely one of the most comfortable and best sounding I've used in that price range.

:D If i was to name names of the different pairs of headphones i have used, rating each pair with a mark out of 10 i would most likely be flamed (especially as chokka has just named the pair i would give 1/10 :P)

I'm incredibly fussy with headphones :( :D

Each to their own, we can only post suggestions based on past experiences and as I say, mine are still going strong so I'm inclined to recommend them as being good :)

Although with a good set of headphones its also good to have a good sound card as you get that finer quality within sound.

Aye definately, you notice the quality from the soundcard more the better the headphones are, my setup used to be a Xonar DX with a connection to an amp and then my sennheiser HD595s into the amp, but i did away with the amp to save space and got the cheaper HD555s variants to save a bit of money now :)

It's just a pitty that the only option people really have in soundcards are creative (bleugh) or asus, the auzentech ones ive heard have some major problems that haven't been fixed since release, so that really puts most vista users into the hands of asus because creatives drivers are so pants >_<

I was thinking of getting this (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CRE-XFIXG) card for my system because ive noticed as soon as i put in my beasty gtx 260 when playing games and trying to speak to my mates on ventrillo i get so much distorted sound, and i read that with onboard sound it distorts because the system priortises the graphics on the PCI-E port.

I have always used a sound card, I have been told the same thing about the onboard sound...
Crative Sounds cards in my opinion are really good, I have never had any serius issues with their cards apart from when Vista first came out, the drivers were bad and unreliable, but now creative have pulled their act together and I can't fault them.

I haven't used a creative soundcard in well over a year now but i would highly recommend checking up on what their drivers are like before buying it, as i notice your using vista

I had one of those before i got my xonar DX and i had so many problems with it combined with vista64, and tbh i wish i had bought the PCI version of the xonar rather than the PCI-E, but you know how it is when new tech comes out :P i really wanted to use those little PCI-E ports haha

EDIT: oh nevermind sybex has just answered the drivers question for me, though the xonar ones come highly recommended by alot of people and highly regarded as being better than the creative parts, but im not too sure about that myself (personally i think they are all buggy and awful and we need another manufactuer to come in and make something decent for gaming)

Well i just checked their site and it seems their software/drivers support 64bit vista, looks i might have to invest in one of these aswell as my new case.

I don't think I'll ever buy a Creative soundcard again after all the issues that they had with Vista, and the way that they screwed customers around by not releasing working drivers. My next card will be an Asus, but as has already been said, it really is a pity that there aren't more options out there for us.

I do agree with the above comment - gave me and a lot of my customers pain and I think their aftersales is useless. I tried to call them to get a supported price on 400 units a few weeks ago - after calling about 10 times I gave up.

The thing is with most boards now the on board audio is good enough for most things - if it was not for Gibbo we would not even sell their cards.

If you dont like them and dont want to sell them you can always lower the price ;).
