Hey

Which is the best 775 chip for me?

I game, I dont encode, I dont care about stupid benchmarking, and browse the net.

Are quad cores any bettter for me, over a E8600 as the E8600 has better stock speeds and I'm sure games do not use the quad cores.

Can the E8600 clock better too?

What you can do really depends on your motherboard and CPU cooler.

There is a lot to it. The E8600 has a soldered heatsink, whereas the E7400 doesn't. So you can push the E8600 further. 4.5 GHz isn't unknown.

But for me, the cheapie £60 E5200 is the overclocking standout. That's because there really isn't a lot in it with varying cache size above 2MB.

DX11 will support gaming multi-processing much better than DX10, so in 6 months time, it will be quad FTW.

I say go with the E8400 and save yourself best part of £100 and get a decent cooler, think they overclock to 3.8 atleast

What motherboard do you have>?

I have a Abit IP35 Pro, currently with a E2200

I have 4GB Corsair PC8500 RAM

I wouldn't recommend a E8600 as a E8400/500 clock just as well.

e8400 > e7400 > e5200 performance
e5200 > e7400 > e8400 Value for money

take your pick really, all are excellant

I upgraded my 1MB E2180 OC @2.66GHz to a 4MB E6700 OC @3.33 GHz, and quite honestly it was very disappointing in real life. Perhaps 15% more framerate in CPU intensive games.

Probably more depends how big a screen you game on and what graphics you use to decide what is a good match, unless you are driven by a very demanding game.

You can find used E6 series chips like the E6750 - E6850 for 50-70 quid, personally I would take one of those over an E5200.

...since we are talking about bang/buck.

I don't agree, getting a used chip is dodgy and i'd rather have an e5200 anyway, incredibly overclockable, only the cache is a slight downside.

45nm is better though over the older E6XXX chips isnt it?

At the end of the day hes after a very highly clocked dual core so E8500 if its hardly any more expensive that a E8400 will clock past 4Ghz so will be the fastest.

How is getting a used chip dodgy? I've only bought a chip new a handful of times...I pretty much always buy used.

Also the E6750 is slightly faster than the E5200 clock for clock due to the cache, and will most likely overclock higher as well.

The lowest budget Wolfdale I'd go with is the E7200 which is more or less the same clock for clock compared with the E6x series

Not in every case.

Not in every case.

Explain why ?

The wolfdale architecture is faster clock for clock than conroe, but this is no longer true when you cripple the cache. Also the E5200 chips do not clock as well as the majority of G0 stepping dual cores such as the E6750 and E6850. Most of these easily do 3.8-4ghz where very few E5200s can do that.

I would say e8400,
Its a good clocker 4 should be achievable on air, and the extra cache over the e5xxx/e7xxx series should help in games.

don't forget the E8200's!!!!!!!
<3 E8200 =]

Yeah, but they have gone up in price a lot recently, and are harder to find at a decent price
I mean, I got one up to 4.4, until my RAM held me back, so they are good chips, but due to the price hikes, and the lower multi, I think the e8400 is a better buy
