Hey everyone
I'm always looking for new TV shows to watch and I thought it would be cool to find out what others here rate as their top shows. Please list your top three TV shows (and by show I mean a proper series, not some reality junk) and the reason why you enjoy them.
For me, my list is as follows:
24
Still one of the best TV shows around. It has great action, suspense, plot twists, and the toughest lead character of any TV series, Jack Bauer. What more could you ask for? Even into the seventh season, it is still incredibly gripping and keeps you guessing right until the very end.
Dexter
This has to be one of the most beautifully filmed shows I have ever watched. A serial killer that kills serial killers? It doesn't really get any better than that! Given the dark content of the show, they do an extremely good job with the sets, keeping it all so light an airy. It actually makes me want to visit Miami! All-in-all, this is an extremely good show. Definitely one of the best on TV for me.
Deadwood
I don't normally like Westerns but this show is something else. Ian McShane plays Al Swearengen brilliantly, bringing him to life so perfectly, and it goes a long way to highlight just what it was like in that time when you see him in action. All the other characters are very strong, and it is always interesting watching the story develop further and further into the gold rush timeline. HBO have, as usual, excelled at bringing this show to life.
So, over to you all. Post your favourite TV shows and let us know why you like them so much :)

As something new to me and seen over the last 12 months, I found Maigret a gem and Michael Gambon as just perfect as this French detective. He comes over as a likeable and gentle character although of course tough if he needs to be with crime.
Sticking with detectives, I've seen a couple of Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett playing a wonderful slightly eccentric but none the less still a genius SH on TV fairly recently. Both David Burke and Edward Hardwcik used in these make superd Watsons too. It's quite different to the (IMO enjoyable) bumbling Bruce and never flappabble Rathbone but I think more realistic.
Also for a tied thrid have been enjoying wathing the efforts of Wycliffe and of Henry Crabbe (Pie in The Sky) lately. Both can pass away a gentle say hr for me. Come to think of it, so can that scarey county of Midsommer...

Well, out of the current crop of shows being aired I quite like Dollhouse, Lost and Heroes. There are many more I like but they are all of US origin. UK makes rubbish TV these days apart from Top Gear and the odd Horizon here and there.

Mine varies constantly, most US-based, and not sure I could pick only 3! A few that spring to mind are NCIS, Top Gear, The Wire

I forgot about the 4400 - i thought that was brilliant! Once of the best things I saw that should have been a series was something called the lost room, it was only a 3 parter but was really good.

First series was fantastic and I couldn't wait for the second. Then it was all over in, what, 7 programs? All due to lack of funding. It could have been so much better :(
Can't stand Lost/24/Heroes etc. Just see it all as typical drawn-out American carp. Must be my age :)
And yet West Wing was a fantastic mix of humour, storyline and current events

Aha, someone else who's seen the Lost Room, I thought it was just me. :)
Excellent show, I've got it on disc somewhere, I'll have to dig it out & watch it again.
Cheers for reminding me Amy. :hat:

lol, my favourite ever FG bit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEQ1EbJ9gpw
HAHA good one, I cant find a clip of it... but one of my all time scenes goes like this
Death Has a Shadow
Lois: “Remember the time you got drunk off the wine at church?”
Peter: “(sips chalice, coughs) Whoa! Is this really the blood of Christ?”
Preist: “Yes.”
Peter: “Man, that guy must’ve been wasted 24/7”
Lois: “Or that time at the ice cream store”
Peter: “Oh, butter rum’s my favorite!”
(lick)
(falls through table)
Brian: “And remember you had an irish-coffee the day we went to see ‘Philadelphia’?”
Peter: “I got it, that’s the guy from ‘Big’, Tom Hanks. Oh man, funny guy that Tom Hanks, everything he says is a stitch.”
Tom Hanks: “I have AIDS”
Peter: “Hahahaha!”

The US version of Life on Mars is surprisingly good. Having been to the States many times I can see how the errrr general populace would be confused by the UK version, but the US version is much more... and I'm going to hate typing this... culture independant.
If you're of a certain age (like moi), you'll love it. And the music.
I'm really liking the Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles series as well, couple that with Battlestar and it's geek central every Friday night. All of the above are due to end shortly... nothing good to replace them on the horizon :(

Battlestar Galactica.
Scrubs.
Brilliant mini series i saw a few months ago called "Being Human." Was only about 5-6 episodes long, but it was the perfect balance of drama and humour.

You have good taste :-)
for me -
1) 24
2) Dexter
3) Spaced
It's a close call between 24 and dexter, I must say, but when I watch 24, it always seems to trump dexter. Season 3 of Dexter was a little weaker than the first 2 series.
Spaced, well, what can I say, comedy genius! It was actually a toss up between that and The Office. Spaced is just a little closer to the heart for me with all the cool references to old skool films, cartoons, TV shows etc etc. Brilliant!

Dexter - dark, well shot and strong stories.
Entourage - Very witty, and strong.
Allo Allo - odd choice and even wittier, and obviously I don't think anybody else would choose this. But comes from a different time.
Honourable mentions :
QI, HIGNFY, Top Gear are all good shows. Simpsons for how long it's pulled the ratings; but have to say recent seasons haven't been their best. Futurama's pretty good. I'd rate the current season of Family Guy episodes (7) as some of their best. I didn't like previous years where they've relied on flashbacks too often, which got repetitive after a while. American Dad's funny. Frasier, Jonathon Creek are other ones.
